Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM next from Canon

Strangely doesn’t excite me. I’m happy enough with a 70-200 or using my 300mm. The 300mm 2.8 II I’d consider my best lens. Better than the 600 F4 II. It’s great with an extender. I’m happy with the RF 100-500mm too. A great all round lens. Maybe if the price was half that price it might interest me. It just seems quite excessive as a price. If it had a 1.4 extender built in it would be closer to understandable. I’m sure it’s possible to get a better image quality than the current 300mm 2.8 but it’s hard to imagine. It’s perfection for me.

I already feared that the hood would not be included with the lens. At one point started selling its 1D cameras without an AC adapter. So one day they might have the idea not to include the hood to bring down the price.
Bringing down the price isn't Canon's objective. The whole idea is to get you to part with as much of your money as possible. Even at 10K with hood, Canon will sell ship loads of this lens.

I'll be very surprised if it's an internal zoom - AFAIK all RF tele-zooms so far have been extending zooms. I also doubt very much that extenders will work at the short end. Hope I'm wrong. As for weight and size, I'll lay odds it'll be shorter and lighter than the EF300/2.8.
The EF 200-400L is internal zoom, and I suspect this, being a supertele, will be internal zoom as well.

Seriously though...I love love love my old EF 70-200, it's my favorite lens, but I can't count how many times I wish I had an extra 100 on the end, especially for sporting events. On the other hand, I think I've wanted to go wider than 70 maybe....twice, ever, when I've selected the 70-200 for whatever thing it is I'm shooting that day.

EF traditionally had both types of zoom operation.

All of the big white RF models so far are extending zooms:

RF 70-200/2.8
RF 70-200/4
RF 100-500/4.5-7.1

It's certainly possible that internal zooming models could be launched (personally I prefer internal zoom and internal focus), but the trend is definitely towards extending zooms. Time will tell.

I definitely believe that a 200-500 with built-in TC is on the cards, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Canon go one better, and bang out a 200-600 with built-in TC, as it would appeal strongly to bird photographers - and there are *plenty* of them with enough money and enthusiasm to fork out whatever such a lens would cost.
