Gura Gear Kiboko V2.0…22L+ or 30L

I’m traveling to South Africa in July and will be using the Canon RF100-300mm 2.8L lens (from Canon). Since I don’t have this lens to measure myself, I’m reaching out to anyone who owns it and the R1. Could you kindly measure the length of the bare lens, the length with the R1 attached with the hood in place, and the length with the hood reversed? I’ve checked online, but I just want to confirm these measurements before I proceed to purchase the 22L or 30L.

RF 100-300mm bare lens - 323mm/12.72”
RF 100-300 F2.8 with Hood and Body Length: 47cm/18.5cm
RF 100-300mm attached to R1 hood in place ????

The Canon specs for the bare lens do not include the front or rear caps, and I presume if you’re talking about putting the lens in a bag, then you’d want both in place for the bare lens and the front cap in place for the mounted lens. These measurements include the cap(s).

100-300: 343mm (13.5”)
100-300 on R1, hood reversed: 405mm (15.94”)
100-300 on R1, hood in place: 467mm (18.38”)

Personally, I keep a B+W 112mm clear filter on mine that adds 9.5mm (3/8”) to the length; I took the filter off before making the above measurements.

One more consideration – bag specs and the fact that bags are flexible. The Lowepro Flipside 400 (original version) has an interior length spec of 424mm and the R1 + 100-300 (415mm) fits, though it’s tight. But…that combo also fits in the Think Tank DH-150 holster (a very tight fit but the zipper closes) that has an interior length spec of 381mm.

I own the F-stop Anja 37L and the Tilopa 50L (both excellent backpacks), but I’m contemplating the GG 30L or the Boris IV because I believe they’re better choices for working out of a bag when I’m in the field. Considering your measurements, I should be able to pack the R1+100-300mm in one side and then my R5 Mark II+70-200mm Z, TC’s on the other side.

I had planned to bring my RF100-500mm lens, but I’ve decided to bring two 2.8 lenses instead, as suggested by our guide-driver. The 100-300 with TC’s will really cover 90% of all eventualities. While the addition of the 400mm 2.8 lens would be highly desirable, weight considerations necessitate a compromise.

I do like the Boris IV bag but I think it is a bit heavier than the GG. I also have a lot of bags because I need them for different reasons. We have backpacks specifically designed for on-site shooting, backpacks for traveling, and I have bags that I keep at home exclusively to store my cameras, lenses, and other accessories. The list goes on and on, lol.. I am always in search of that perfect bag but have yet to find it!

The only drawback is that you cannot carry a tripod centered on the back of the bag.

Thanks. The price is the same as B&H, but Adorama’s shipping cost is $40.00 US, unlike B&H’s free shipping (to Canada). Unfortunately, it’s now going to be costly to bring goods back into Canada from the US.

If you’re open to an unsolicited recommendation, the extra bulk of the Arca plate attached to the Canon foot and the BlackRapid lug attached to the plate could be reduced. I use the Really Right Stuff LCF-53 replacement foot on mine, it has a QD socket that allows easy connection of my BlackRapid QD strap.

Nope…though after your question, it looks like yours does. What brand, if I may ask?

Hasn’t been something I’ve worried about, my gear is insured (well, everything >$1K). Though an AirTag in my luggage did enable me to locate my bag the airline left in Rome as we were flying from Venice to Calabria and fetch it before it would have been delivered (Al Italia’s chosen local courier ran on Italy time, and I was on Sicily and needed the diving gear that was in the suitcase sooner).

As neuroanatomist provided me with the accurate dimensions, actually seeing the R1 with 100-300mm 2.8 in the GG 30l really helps. It’s almost as I imagined. Not a lot of room with the hood in place, which is ok. With the hood reversed, I should be able to put the rain cover at the end of the bag or one of the extenders.

Even though all my camera gear is insured, I really like the SmallRig plate with the AirTag.
