Hello

Once again, after a previous failed attempt to divest myself of Canon Rumors. I'm trying again. Hopefully this go doesn't result in a year of legal insanity. Nothing against lawyers, but they don't make anything easy or stress free.

I have agreed once again sell the site.

This company owns a bunch of sites in our little niche, so I don't foresee the same problems that I previously had to deal with. The process will take between 12 - 18 months. In that time, there will be a lot of changes to the site. A lot of those changes will be seen in the next 2-6 months. I have already given up 95% of backend autonomy. I will also be giving up social, mailing, design/UI and those sorts of things in the near future.

There will now be a team of 8-10 people dealing with each aspect of Canon Rumors. These sorts of endevours have long been overwheling for a single person to handle, and I never wanted to manage people in this business. I'm not a great teacher and take things personally for better or worse. That has lead to some mental health episodes that weren't great for the site, but they did lead to finally getting a handle on my brain and life.

I don't want to sit at a desk anymore and would like to do something else, which I have wanted to do for years now. A new dream if you will. It won't make me rich, but I can't wait to start.

That said, it's been 17 years of relationship building, so I will likely be around in some capacity to provide certain types of information. That will be about the extent of my involvement once this entire process is completed.

January 2008 this site came to be as something to do other than play World of Warcraft, though I really did have a badass Druid (For the Horde!). That's a long time in an industry that has changed so much. A lot of the friends I made have long since moved on and we have this "influencer" thing that I simply don't relate to, and never want to relate to.

A few years ago I was out, and thought I was out, but here were are. Though since that time, this site has become a better place to hang out. The moderators have done a great job getting rid of the terrible people that riddled this forum and my inbox. I think they all shoot Sony now.

No, the site won't become some AI trainwreck of rubbish. This is a real company that will be evolving the site. The core of Canon Rumors will remain intact, that's why people are here to begin with. There could be so much more though.

I will update before a major change to the site is coming.

Cheers,
Craig

I have never been a real active participant but have enjoyed Canon Rumors for many years. Although I (briefly) made a living in photography in the early '60s, I have never been an "expert." This forum has answered many questions for me as I moved deeper into digital photography. It has some great people who are willing to share their knowledge. Thank you for all your efforts to keep things going.

Updates
  1. Ad network change to Raptive from Snack Media. I'm still waiting for the wrapper to be installed to hide ads to premium members on the site. I was told it would be fixed today for sure. One of those things I can't just do myself now! It's a one and done thing though.
  2. Photo Contest coming on March 3 with some real prizes! The topics will be fairly broad, I don't want things to be crazy niche. Just show some photos you like! It will be sponsored by Midwest Photo in Columbus, Ohio. We have figured out a way to make the prizes "global" instead of US only.
  3. There will be new writers starting in the next month or so. I'm not sure where that's going yet, but there will be more stuff to read. No word on anything YouTube or TikTok related, but it is part of the scope. Both are a ton of work to do right.

Similar to a previous commentator, I have been an occasional participant and have enjoyed Canon Rumors for many years as well. Good luck. Job well done. You have fought the good fight. You have finished the race.

If I could offer some advice as someone involved in a volunteer activity for over 30 years and has now "retired" from it, sometimes you are able to pass the torch to a younger generation who share those values but have new ideas and new vigor; and sometimes you can pass the torch to a younger generation who have new values and new ideas and new vigor; and sometimes you just have to leave, recognizing that both you and times have changed, and so things have run its course. Most of us aren't Lorne Michaels, but if we can recognize when it's time to move on and do so with grace and few regrets, that's a good legacy and that's all we can ask for. Everything else is gravy. Good luck!

...words of wisdom right here.

Well done.
