I'm a total laymen on the decisions canon makes to balance making a high performance camera vs marketing but my impression is marketing is the higher concern and honestly I can't blame them for that. But boy would I love to see the best features from the 6D and the 5D3 all in one camera.
For me, the worst problems with equipment are the ones that work sometimes and not others.
A quick background on my initial impressions of the 6D
In January I bought a 6D it just seemed like the best value for what you get wifi and gps seemed like nice features bundled with the center cross type focus point that really performs well. In reality the gps doesn't turn off when the camera is off (this seems like the camera is intentionally Nerf'd).
Overall, I like the camera, its a little tough as a wedding photographer carrying two camera bodies (5dMk2 is my main) that are controlled a little different but that's where I am.
My 6D Issue
At a wedding in march I had an assistant with one of my 600ex-rt flash on her camera as a slave to my Flash giving me the ability to backlight a bit. And her the ability to switch to master and fire a third 600EX-RT slave if she had the angle and I didn't. That's when my flash stopped firing on the 6d. I checked the image meta data and it indicated the flash fired but it didn't. Additionally the flash switched to TTL from ETTL-II. On my 6D menu settings some of the flash functions were inaccessible. I sent the camera in for repairs (which sucked because its a busy time of year for me to only have one full frame camera.) Canon was great, they got my camera back quickly and apparently fixed the problem (I haven't been home yet as I was on a destination gig) I did call the support line they told me the hot shoe was malfunctioning. It was in in-warranty repair no charge (thank you canon).
Has anyone else have this issue? I get the impression its not too common. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?
The worst part about it was for a while sometimes the 6D would allow ETTL and communicate with my flash and sometimes it would just stop. I couldn't make sense of it.
I am looking forward to trying it out again when I get back home.
