Canon EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II and CF-R20EP Short Supply Notice

They spun a report on Canon gaining mirrorless market share into a story about Canon drastically losing overall market share.
"Is this the end for Canon".

Too many people can't read data, and they don't dig down a layer to substantiate the data that they can't read anyway. It's the world we live in. People just don't know when things are outside their wheelhouse.

This already feels like a tactic from every camera company now days. I think they are making it to be in short supply on purpose so people get in the habit of preordering instead of waiting to be in stock

Maybe, but that can backfire too when those who pre-ordered early but not at the very second pre-orders opened don't end up with a camera the first weeks after shipping starts. People who buy out of FOMO rather than actual need lose the "need" to buy and are more likely to cancel. It also risks first time buyers looking elsewhere (Sony, Nikon). That and people who buy out of FOMO are also more likely to have buyers remorse and return the product a few days later.

I know it seems odd, even sinister when these notices come out days after pre-order starts, but I think Canon and Nikon production capacity is probably tiny compared to behemoths like Apple or Sony and even those companies can have a hard time getting product out at launch. Also it's basic business school that you can't make money without a product to sell. Preorders are not sales until the product is shipped to the customer. So intentionally making short supply is literally a money loser, not a money maker. No legit company intentionally does this as a strategy.

Yes. 100 times yes.

People/visionaries smarter than me, three decades ago, had hoped that 'data' on the Internet would level the playing field and make our citizenry smarter... about everything.

How's that working out?

Well, for those who are interested in Canon gizmos and read CR, it is working out pretty well. You and Richard supply clarity to things that matter (to us). Bravo!

Unfortunately I can think of a number of areas, important areas, where the glut of 'data', in the wrong hands, fails at the task of supplying clarity. In fact, at times data misused can be worse than no data at all.

Now, tell me again: why isn't Canon truly competing in the APS-C world, and why did the M format get the axe?!

Thanks for reading.

Canon Australia has done it again.. a custom strap for every pre-ordered R5ii for those that like them. Definitely better than the one that comes it which is pretty poor overall. No spare battery this time though. Standard 5 year warranty also applies. Haven't needed it yet for my R5 which is good either way.

We'll see with the next round of APS-C RF cameras whether or not Canon is serious about the segment. I think they just worked hard to hit all the price points without fully developing the line. I think we'd all like to see the R7 II go a bit upmarket. I think The R10 is the best of the APS-C bunch.

More APS-C lenses? They confuse me with what they currently offer, but then they release an $1100 VR lens and another dual lens for another company's product that doesn't seem to be gaining any traction in the marketplace (colour me surprised) and then said company axes the follow-up shortly after. It seems there were better places to invest in APS-C lenses. Maybe Canon sees something I don't.........

EOS M... A a couple of reasons stand out. It was a PowerShot camera for most of its existence and that team was obviously disbanded. The bigger issue? The flange distance, there was simply no place for EOS M shooters to go in the Canon lineup once RF arrived. That's not good for revenue and keeping people with the brand. I still have hope for an EOS M style body with an RF mount.

"Hope is a dangerous thing".

Placed my pre-order of the the R5 II in advance back in May, being listet as mid twentieth at my pro dealer. I´ve received a notificaton yesterday to be patient. Delivery will be delayed as of autumn. It's a pity, because the autumn bird migration will already be over by then.

I will check in on the ship date with a few retailers.

Canon Australia gives a 5 year warranty for all bodies/lenses either direct or via authorised reseller. The grey market has basically disappeared and the prices are equivalent to the US pricing (plus 10% GST) so pretty sweet. The extended warranty has been in place for 4+ years now.

That's something Canon Canada should be doing, there is a grey market problem in the land of "eh". They keep trying the CarePAK thing, but selling extended warranties on cameras and lenses is still a low percentage of buyers, and grey market buyers don't much care about warranty.

Some grey-market companies offer a solid, reliable 3 years warranty...
I just bought the RF 2,8/15-35 for Euro1699. Regular price in France, Germany and Italy: Euro2649. Price difference: Euro950.
No comment (and no hesitation!).
Today, I'm not leaving home, not even going to the washroom, impatiently waiting for UPS...

Again, WHO is buying all these Canon, Sony, Fuji and Blackmagic cameras and lenses? Big companies like us who are buying 25 to 100 of them at a time!
If you mean the pro models that is probably true but Canon mostly sells regular cameras to regular folks like the R50.
On the other hand, a lot of cheap cameras like the R100 are sold for commercial purposes.
There are also Canon's multi-purpose cameras that do not sell to consumers at all.

The biggest gray market dealer in the USA, Abe's of Maine, really try to hard sell you on buying a warranty from them.
They go to the point that people hate them but a lot of people are not aware that there is zero warranty on gray market items.

I am not sure if it is an intentional tactic but if it is then it is probably already backfiring.
More people do preorder but they preorder from multiple vendors and cancel most of their orders.

That’s disappointing! I have a trip planed for the 29th of August as well, and the ship date when I bought was Aug 15, now Aug 20. I suspect it won’t make it this time.

I don't know what gear you have and how it limits you. I haven't been limited in practice by my gear for some time now, just the availability of birds to shoot.

A new body will be welcome. Always welcome. My R5 does not focus as good as it should in lower lights, loosing focus point to often. Also varying errors. Fixing ist will be to expensive.
My R7 is perfect for good light, but suffers from heavy noise over 1600 Iso. So, I am using the R6II for owls and other little owls (In German Steinkauz, Uhu, Waldohreulen usw.).
Pre-shooting mode on the R5 II will be really welcome. An starting owl with opened wings....from the beginning on... in good quality... wow. How I am waiting for this.

Even when there was a grey market locally (ordered from Hong Kong), they still had a default warranty under Australian consumer law of 12 months but could be extended for long life items in theory eg Apple had a 1 year local warranty but were selling a 2 year telco plan so they had to extend the warranty to 2 years due to the expected minimum life.
