Price Increases Coming From Canon USA

"China has suspended exports of a wide range of critical minerals and magnets, threatening to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world." -NYTimes
If this comes true, camera prices in the US will be our least important problem.

There is also the threat of a new semiconductor tariff plan that will also have an effect on supply chains.

Not understood. Are you implying that a Japanese produced camera gets extra expensive in the US if it uses semiconductors from China in the product? I'm no expert, but if that is what you think, I'm pretty sure you are wrong. It is the final product ("a camera") and its origin that US takes the tariffs for.

Neither do I see any reason the US tariffs could have a negative effect on prices in the rest of the world?

Canon may rise prices outside US to pocket higher profits in the current situation, but as long as other tariffs stays the same, a Japanes made-camera with parts from China and Korea has no reason to cost more in EU - unless it uses something from China that is hit by the tariffs China applied to USA.

Remains to be seen. There's a new term, 'secondary tariffs', and that concept could be applied to products made in a country using components produced in another country, e.g. China. Have to wait and see what the 'semiconductor tariff' plan is...or the concept of the plan, or the inkling of a concept of a thought about a plan, or whatever...and then see if it happens...and then see if it is retracted in minutes, hours or days.

Perhaps you remember some of his "strange" Moves? Peace-Deal with Ukraine, declaring Canada as State Nb. 51, great interest in Greenland. Everything had to do with rare elements. The second biggest deposit of rare elements after the deposit in the "Bayan Obo Mining District" in inner Mongolia is Kvanefjeld in Greenland and the mayor shareholder of the company who owns the rights to explore it is a chinese company.
Wouldn't it speed up the process if Trump and Putin run a job rotation?

I've noticed that historically when prices go up due to unfavorable/volatile exchange rates they rarely, almost-invariably do not go back down if/when exchange rates become more favorable (SeaCam products were notorious in that way). I know tariffs are a different animal but hopefully prices truly go down directly proportional to tariff reductions/eliminations...

Thanks for reminding me about the monopoly here.
When I talk about seldom earths, and I do this since about 2011, I quite often compare this monopoly to the OPEC. Those are a kindergarten compared to it.

Hypothesis:

1. Trump announces massive tariffs. stock markets tank.
2. Trump and friends buy lots of shares
3. Trump cancels tariffs
4. Profit

Be interesting to see if anything like that comes to light in the next few months.
Nothing will ever come to light like it would in a true democracy...

You’re behind the times. There was a video clip of Trump in the Oval Office last week, pointing to Charles Schwab and saying ‘He made $2.5M $2.5B' (from the postponed tariffs).
