Canon EOS R1 Specifications [CR2]

The 2023 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato is a little light on horsepower. It really needs at least 650 hp instead of only ~600 hp. If it had more, I’d certainly buy it. Maybe with the 2024 model they will step up their game. How do they expect to compete with Ferrari?

Meanwhile, I need to run an errand. Headed out to my Subaru.

I warmly recommend you the Dodge Challenger Demon by Hennessey, about 1750 HP. Should be enough for shopping....The Lamborghini is indeed a lame duck!
Meanwhile, my Outback is waiting in my garage...

Don't worry, in my opinion, with expanding dynamic range, it's better to use pan focus. The way you tightened the contrast also reduces the artificial feeling I get with higher dynamic range photos. So, I think you should feel good about them and I enjoyed seeing them.
Thank you!
A lot of people found it counter-intuitive, but I've always found HDR images too flat. And do not get me started on the colors

It’s interesting that way before photography was ever invented artists of old, who could have painted light shadows / no shadows had they wished, painted with deep light and shade as that’s what generally makes a picture compelling.
I notice that now the novelty of shadow lifting in photography is wearing thin……

Yep!
Lifting shadows too much, in most cases, has the negative impact of detracting from the image's subject (unless the subject itself is in the shadows).
Your anectode is spot on: I am a big fan of Caravaggio and he was known for the dramatic effect of the deep dark areas in his paintings.

Sometimes that happens. Many years ago, I was at the National Gallery and the power went out. I was really glad I had a Sony camera with an Exmor sensor with me, so I could still take a picture in the darkness and push the exposure by 10 stops with no noise penalty.

The DR advantage against the A9III will be most noticeable before ISO 250. At higher ISOs the DR graphs will probably converge, similar to this

Sony, I guess, is relying on the idea that A9 series cameras aren't used much at low ISOs anyway.
The R3 is also a lot better at high ISO.
That is a major shortcoming since the shutter speed on the a9 III goes so high.
With a flash or in decent light the lack of banding and ability to freeze action give the a9 III a significant advantage but in many other ways, it is an inferior camera for action.

What is interesting is that Canon (and Nikon?) has reduced the size/weight (-16% volume/-400gms) of the R3 body vs the 1DXiii. I don't think that anyone would say that the body needs to be unnecessarily heavy but good to balance larger lenses. The smaller but still ergonomic R3 would have provided good feedback to Canon if the R1 size would be similar or not.
The Z 9 and Z 8 are much bigger than the R3 and R5.
Although, I expect the R1 to be closer to the size of the Z 9.

We've had this discussion before and I don't consider launch price to be relevant to what is in the market today. Coming up to a year since R8 release and the RP is still available. Why not leave it as a price/performance segment if it is still selling and making money.
Canon EOS R8 Body $999 (Reg $1499)

I understand what you mean by too flat. Like most things, there's many ways to think about it.
We could probably make a topic, spend a year discussing colors and not reach a consensus that would be satisfying for everyone involved.

You were lucky activists didn't throw tomato soup on those charts the day you went.

It has not there are only really two active developers and they have the cameras that they have.
It is not much worth the effort when we get so much with our cameras for the money.
As far as I remember, the latest top-end camera supported was 5DIII. It's been 7.5 years since 5DIV and 5.5 years since R. They don't support the R line at all.
If the project isn't completely abandoned that's great, but it's not evolving and for the purpose, it's dead.

For someone who will buy two R1´s, the specs are quite disappointing!

As a sports shooter i know my current 20mp doing great, but seeing what 45mp can do with Nikon (in addition to the Nikon 400 f2.8 with built in extender - what i am very sad about Canon does not offer - but I expected more then 30mp...

Will be a good workhorse of cause, but a little "hmmm" remains

There's no DR measurements on photostophotos yet, but you can compare them visually here:

Maybe you should switch brands to avoid the onset of depression due to your disappointment and sadness.
