APPLE CANNOT HANDLE THE NEW CR3 FILES in Photos.. Using R5.II - Canon admits there was a change in the CR3 structure.

Have you tried opening them in the iOS Photos app? I can open my R5M2 raws there without issue. iOS 18.5.
No, I have not. I need iOS to support them in FILES. I know (have been told/heard) that the R5m2 CR3 files are
different from the earlier CR3 files. At this point I don't know who is to 'blame' ... will some future version of iOS
support this version of CR3 or will Canon change. If it is Canon that will change I'm hoping/guessing that it will
be in some form of "camera update".
Does anyone even know if Apple is aware of the problem and, even better, working on a fix?

My R5m2 is one of the earlier ones - but it is almost a year old now. Too soon to hope for a fix to this issue?

.CR3 handling in Preview / Finder was broken by the last but one macOS update: they still worked fine in Photos, it was just Preview and Finder that broke. The most recent 15.5 update appears to have fixed it, so maybe update to the latest iOS / iPadOS / macOS and try again?

I confirm that 15.4.1 works with Preview on .CR3 files. I didn't know of the 15.5 update so scheduled for tonight!

I can state that iOS 18.whatever (the very latest) does NOT work for viewing CR3 images
using FILES. I just tested with the very latest updates to both the R5m2 and to my iOS.

I hope it gets fixed. I suspect/hope that the next iOS update will correct it.

I can confirm what you write as well.

It seems like there is a disconnect here. I want (need) IOS FILES to be able to -display- the images my R5m2
creates (CR3). I have all the other access to these image files I need/want (Adobe LrC and Photoshop and even
Elements) ... but I want (need) to be able to simply -VIEW- the CR3 files using the IOS FILES app. I want to do
this to see what files I will/will not import into LrC and also to do a 'first pass' to eliminate images for problems
such as out of focus, bird not in frame, etc.
Here is the actual workflow I'm trying to set up. 1) Take pictures (saved to camera card). 2) Look at pictures using
IOS FILES and eliminate the 'totally wrong ones'. 3) Transfer images from camera card to pSSD using IOS FILES.
4) And then, finally, import images to LrC.
Yes, I can eliminate the steps 2 and 3 and that works - but that means that LrC creates the 1:1 files associated
with images I'm -never- going to use. Time. I'd rather eliminate those images using FILES (steps 2 and 3).

That's a workflow I really wanted to work as well, it would save me from bringing a laptop on longer trips. But there's a lot of friction every step of the way :( I wouldn't mind importing everything into LR mobile first, but transferring the culled and perhaps lightly edited image to LRC was a pain. Combine that with not being able to use profiles (e.g. Color Fidelity), I gave in and will bring a laptop with me.

I do wonder if the new "iOS" USB mode on recent bodies combined with the updated Canon Camera Connect might help with this. Transferring over USB and using CCC to cull. It does save to the photo roll instead of files, though. Something to try next time when I'm bored in hide :)

Apple (Sequoia) does not support the CR3 files from the R5MarkII - which are a bit different from the older CR3 files. I like to use Photos but this program cannot handle these files. So I would have to convert them first (Adobe DNG converter or Canon's DPP).
Does anyone have a more simple solution? or has only Apple the answer?
GraphicConverter.
This was the original photo management utility program bundled with Macs before “Photo“ was even a twinkle in the Apple engineers eye.

This program was and is far superior to “Photos.” it can convert virtually any file format to any other file format and of course, open virtually any file format. You can manipulate virtually all image data-IPC, EXIF, GPS, etc., strip all file information or parts of file information for posting (unless you want your information out there for the world to see), file management, batch processing of file naming using file whatever name you want, dates, keywords, Numbering etc.,, keyword search and replace. Keyword add or subtract…slideshow…. on and on. It’s only about $50 which is good for all the upgrades in the major numeric version. I use this every day for all my images before I start popping them in to Photoshop for individual refinement. And one more very cool thing is that the author, Thorsten Lemke (program originated in Germany) is highly responsive, often the same day. He has helped me enormously with questions I’ve had and even taken some ideas for inclusion and upgrades. Try that with Apple!

So drop “Photos” today. Start using “Graphic Converter.” I think you’ll be glad you did. (To borrow classic advertising nomenclature.);)
