Can Canon Compete ?

Bud you are the one missing the point what the original question is will Canon make a competitive lens to the nikon 800mm 6.3 neither the 1-500 mm or the 2-800mm are NOT competitive..the question had nothing about BIF or static targets it was about aperture and zoom >> go ahead and twist this conversation any way you feel to keep your ego on top homie .. but the fact of the matter is canon does not make a lens in the price point and zoom/aperture that can clearly compete .
No rumors of future DO or mid-superteles afaik, so probably not in the near future. I guess it is a market Canon isn't in right now, but that's with a lot of these more specialized lenses.

I don't particularly need or want an 800, but I would like a 14/1.4 and a 15/1.4 fisheye (Sigma has shown it can be done) for astro, but Canon has never made those lenses, and there are no rumors of those lenses either, so I'll be waiting a while until Canon makes them or Canon and Sigma reaches an agreement w.r.t. FF RF lenses.

How do you define "competitive"? If we're talking about weight, the RF 800mm 11 is far superior to the Nikon 800mm 6.3... but obviously nobody would actually claim that. In what ways do you find the Nikon 800 to be superior? Just the aperture?

To answer your question, I do doubt that Canon will release a direct competitor to that Nikon lens specifically in the price range. If size/weight isn't an issue, the EF 800mm 5.6L is going on ebay for about the same price as the Nikon (unless I am getting my lens confused).
