Canon’s big announcements coming the third week of July

Well, my gear fund is sitting and waiting for preorders to go live. So make with the announcements, already!
same here in terms of funds ready and waiting. I will likely not preorder, going to let others check it out for a few months before spending the cash this time. Although that might be difficult if it has the few new things I'm looking forward to.

I know some people who went for the Sony deal when they bought your existing cameras and gave a big discount on new Sony. Needless to say they are now obnoxious in singing praises of Sony as they quietly send them in for repair. Sony recently started offering freelancers of another agency 20% discounts in a bid to woo more people who will show up on sidelines sporting their brand, although they no longer buy back your equipment. The lead obnoxious photog keeps asking me when I am switching. I am patient, I've seen a few of these cycles before.

That was debunked (it was in a rumored spec list that was posted on by Adorama on their R1 page then pulled down). Current rumor is 24 MP, 2 ms readout = 1/500 s max sync. But that's still just a rumor.
1/1250thsec would be the perfect spot for my need, but I take 1/500th sec as this is a great step in the right direction, plus it begins to be useful. I have never thought it would be an option, but now that technology advances, rumors woke up my awareness that it would be possible one day. Those who think it is needed, let's speak up.

"We are working on a story about some of the issues plaguing Canon at the moment,"

I vaguely recall Thom Hogan writing that all three companies were having supply issues, delaying the release of new models.
The whole world currently has supply chain issues, because the Huthi rebels force most container ships around the Horn of Africa.

When the time comes, is it better to preorder through my local shop or direct on the canon website?
You can probably both order locally and from one of the big shops (e.g., B&H), and cancel the one that doesn't ship first. Some people place several preorders. With this sort of thing, it's not like the retailer will be stuck with the one you ordered and don't want.

I'd never preorder direct from Canon. Too many people have reported lost orders, their site will show things as in stock but they are non when you try to buy them (but still show in stock).

Canon did this sort of stuff in the early nineties to attack Nikon's dominance in certain areas, so it's not a new strategy. It can be effective though, as Canon proved back in the day.
Canon Australia used to have a small team of people for promotion eg events, equipment try etc which were fairly popular.
I certainly enjoyed them but they retrenched them a few years ago. Most still run workshops etc but it was a bit of a shock locally as they were well liked.
At some point the bean counters look at the numbers and ask if marketing can reel in the numbers.
Perhaps they thought that offering a local 5 year warranty on bodies/lenses would be sufficient differentiator.

Same thing with the retailers where only one seems to have regular events.
Canon are - in some ways - resting on their laurels with market dominance. Shifting the needle would be good for competition and ultimately better for us.

I'm in the underwater photography niche (currently with an R5) and would like, in no particular order:

  • A global shutter body with resolution comparable to the R5 that can flash sync at speeds above 1/200 or 1/250. I know it's not coming this year, but at least commit to working on one. Flash sync is a massive deal underwater since strobes are required for most shots. Not being able to use faster shutter speeds constrains exposure options quite a bit, especially when it comes to the background (getting it nice and dark for example).
  • An RF fisheye lens to replace the old EF 8-15 which is getting difficult to find and requires the RF adapter which adds unneeded weight and length.
  • An L series RF 1:1 macro lens in the 80-85mm range that's not the 85mm f/2 STM (with its 1:2 magnification, slooow AF, etc...). I have the RF 100 macro and it's great, but it would be nice to have an equivalent quality option at a slightly wider focal length for when I'm not after the tiniest of subjects.

I've just gone with Nikon, convinced that this R1 at a crazy price for only 24 MP
wouldn't suit me. I've had enough of waiting for certain lenses that are always promised but never released. Ever-higher prices for increasingly unreliable equipment. An after-sales service whose main concern is to charge a lot for repairs if you're lucky enough to have parts available.

I personally would have waited a week or three to see what the specs and pricing actually are, but enjoy the Z9! Awesome piece of kit.

Great to have someone else in the group doing underwater with the R5 :)
- I would suggest that current global shutter tech would not be great for us ie A9iii with lower resolution and lower dynamic range. I haven't found that rolling shutter is an issue underwater. The A9iii is much more expensive than the R5 so I don't think that high res/high dynamic range/cheaper cost will be possible in the R5ii.
Flash sync <1/250s would be nice. Neither Sony nor Nikon have provided a solution though so perhaps Canon can surprise us. More likely in the R1 though.
I'm using DS232 strobes and even they have problems keeping up at 10fps especially with higher outputs. Using TTL is much faster for composition rather than using manual strobe power settings but I appreciate the skill if you do that.
Higher strobe output to overpower ambient light is nice but keeping accurate distance-to-subject with blowing out the highlights is a challlenge for me.
I am doing a lot of light shaping in post. Always better to do it in camera but having the flexibility in post seems to be working well for me.

- My EF8-15/4 is still working find but I am not following your comment on length as the RF8-15/4 is still the shortest port length vs the other wide angles and within 200gm of the alternatives...
EF8-15/4 = 20mm port extension 700gm (including adaptor)
RF10-20/4 = 28mm 570gm
RF14-35/4 = 50mm 540gm
RF15-35/2.8 = 78mm 835gm
Personally, I am planning to upgrade to RF14-35/4 later this year which will reduce my use of my fisheye even further as it is much wider. I will still use it for astro though. The 'fisheye' look is still unique though but I find it hard to have good compositions.

- Depending on the vis, I have often taken shots of bigger subjects with my 100mm macro. I always enable full focus range just in case of bigger / more distant subjects. If it hunts then I use my hand to bring it back to close focus.
