This seems like a truly unique, future-facing product. Is it?
I have not read the press release nor have I downloaded the app itself, but find it interesting that (apparently), as currently constructed, this Canon-designed app works only with iOS devices. Kudos to Canon for thinking outside of the box.
When external camera capabilities are added to the app, will those capabilities be limited to Canon-branded cameras?
And finally, it seems to me that in order to make this work well with Canon's own bodies, the wireless abilities of those bodies need to made as accessible as possible and more dependable and robust, as dependable as most any iOS device.
And my goodness, the use of dummy batteries and AC power supplies will be the rule for Canon cameras used in this way--my own wish list for Canon's newest bodies includes improved battery life.

EDIT: tablet-based post clean up and another thought.
As for
subscription fees?
If this software is truly unique and open to all cameras...then Canon may have a winner...a winner that, frankly, has little to do with much (most?) of what interests those who post on this very forum. And by winner I mean financial winner--the monthly cost might just work for users, and for Canon.
Let the marketplace decide.
