Canon officially announces the Canon EOS R5 Mark II

Am I reading this right? The 5M2 has the same XPAF as the R1? If so then I think the R5M2 is the more impressive of the 2. Sure all the motion focus is great but at the end of the day it still makes the same picture the R3 does.

Depends on where you look. Canon Europe generally (in my experience) has the most complete spec lists. For example, they were the only ones to fully describe the bit depth of the R5 in the various shutter modes. For the R5 II, Canon Europe, does not mention anything about cross type AF.

It would not surprise me if there were some copy paste errors as Canon tries to roll out two cameras at once. These issues will probably be sorted out in time, regardless if you want one of the two cameras as soon as possible, you should have already pre-ordered it.

In the tech sheet at this page https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/eos-r5-mark-ii I found this information - indicating that the R5II DOES have "cross-type AF" This is important to me... I have read some articles stating the R5II does NOT have cross-type AF... but I hoping it actually does!

I am pretty sure this is a Canon USA mistake when they were making the specifications.

Canon Europe does not have that at all, and even our notes from earlier today didn't have the R5 Mark II with that.

Hmmm.... as an old DSLR User i am not that fascinated by the R5II - the best i could see is the nicer Bodyshape ( Viewfinder ) ;-) .

-> missing the AF-Comtroller like the R3/1
-> missing Fotos of the Backside of the R5II ?

After a While we will see if i switch to Mirrorlesss sometimes.
( For now my restrictions rely on Video - Blackmagic Design PHYXIS 6K EF-Mount a better Solution for me ? )

Greetings from rainy Germany

Bernd

From a DSLR - there's no comparison the R5 and the R5 Mark II mop the floor with respects to any Canon DSLR

What a laughing stock this "rumors" site has become after Japanese rumors resource Nokishita closed in 2022. No leaked photos of R5 II until the release date, lol. Just a dumpster of SEO content and ads.

it's nice to see this was your 1 message in 4 years, thank you for your thoughts.

I will redirect you to here:

because we do stuff far more than just a rumor website and this is why sites like ours don't really give out details. Nokishita was good because it let our sources off the hook from Canon retribution.

If you want just a rumor website, you are welcome to hang out at https://www.canonwatch.com

Just to nip this off.

Canon Japan has no mention of cross type.

That as far as I'm concerned is as good as it gets for a confirmation - and let's face it, Canon USA is inept.

I pre-ordered the R1 from bestbuy. I chose them because I get a 45-day return no-questions-asked so I get to try it to see if it is truly a worthy upgrade from my R3. I am really disappointed there was not a MP increase, I think this was a miss on Canon's part. I know the "pros" will disagree with me but my customers want higher res photos. I may go ahead and pick up the R5M2 if I don't like the 1.

The lack of built-in GPS on the R3 Mark II is not a deal-breaker, but it is inconvenient.. Research-grade nature photographs require accurate time and location data in the metadata. Nonetheless, I have ordered the R5 Mark II.

Anybody wanna buy a 6D Mark II (with GPS) and a few EF lenses—all in excellent condition—at very good prices?
Can't you use the canon adapter and keep the full use of your EF lenses?

Why are you dumping those?

God no :((((((((((((
There were only TWO things I wanted.
High resolution sensor and high resolution EVF. I got none.
FCK.
LOL. I wanted neither of those. Already own a GFX100ii. All I wanted was the stacked sensor with faster readout and more video options ie tally light etc. Those are there. Glad that there is no "Wow" factor. There will be plenty of units available. LOL. I can wait a few months to upgrade my R5.

Thanks so much Richard for the additional information from the Canon Japan website making no mention of cross type AF.

A shame.. but it appears the R5II AF is still insanely good...at the end of the day, that's fantastic. (I do occasionally come across limited situations where the dual pixel AF can't focus on horizontal lines, that's why I was hoping for cross type AF, like the R1 has).

Thanks again for your research / confirmation.... oh, and this website! :)

So, let's just keep rotating our cameras by 90 degrees every now and then.
What is really troubling is Canon's European price policy. But since there are reliable British grey import companies, I'll just have to wait a few more weeks/months to get my R5 II.
Meanwhile, I'm gonna order a cheap brand new R5 from them, to replace my R & 5 DIV.

The battery grip prices at B&H are way less than the prices listed here…

This is cool though:

BG-R20 For Canon EOS R5, R5II, R6, R6II Cameras.

Rare that canon uses a battery grip more than once. Something I loved with my 5d mk iii and 5dsr.
