Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z to be announced this week

this is a lens I didn't know I really wanted. $3k i bet though.....hard to buy at that price. But damn....24-105 f/4 is my favourite lens for almost everything walk about. I'm sure this will be heavier. But...maybe I "need" it anyway....

This may explain the rebates and discounts on the 24-70 2.8 recently too...

I thought the whole purpose of the 24-105mm F4L is to have an all-in-one travel / walk around zoom with decent image quality. The current IBIS tech in mirrorless bodies makes the F4 more than adequate for a variety of light situation. If they make it F2.8 and double the weight/size, not to mention price, who is going to carry this around all day. It defeats the purpose of having a 24-105 zoom in the first place.
Two lenses for events, this one one body, the 70-200 2.8 on the other. PJs, Wedding guys, indoor sport guys. Could be magical. A lot of guys use a 70-200 2.8 for portrait work in studio as well. This would be a single lens compliment to that as well. I just wonder how big and how heavy. And how costly....

There are three RF/RF-S lenses coming from Canon on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Two of them you already knew about, the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM and the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. The third lens coming is a lens people have requested since this web site began 15+ years ago, and that’s an RF

Wow, the tripod collar looks like being ready for Arca mount !?!

Forget the rest of the lens over this earthquake innovation!

What disadvantages do you think a power zoom would be for you?

Depending on the implementation, probably complexity, weight, and potentially lag (i.e. if it is a pure electronic zoom with no mechanical coupling, the zoom motor might not be able to keep up with me racking zoom from wide to tele so there is a 0.1-0.2 second lag while the motor tries to catch up).

I'm definitely not interest by that zoom range. Happy for those who are.

But this makes me think that a RF 70-135mm f/2L USM may also come to market one day. That rumour dates back from 2020 though. Does it still get any mentions?

Doubt it will ever come anytime soon as they just released the 135 not long ago.

Although my two lenses will be this lens + the 100-300 2.8. That's a more natural pairing.

My guess is that powerzoom is similar to RF autofocus, i.e. focus-by-wire and zoom-by-wire.
I'll speculate some more. By guess is that mechanical coupling of the zoom ring to the lens elements is too complex in this lens, so they solved it with a zooming motor. My guess is that the reason is for mechanical simplicity, rather than a video-centric feature.
This is all pure speculation based on nothing at all. But, this is a rumors site after all.
My question is this: will it be internally zooming?

I'm curious, what case would this not replace the 24-70 f/2.8 (assuming same IQ)?
I understand the 24-105 f/4 being much smaller and lighter, and of course the 28-70 has its f/2.
Size and weight probably. This looks like it is a 100-500 size lens (so 1300g+). The 24-70/2.8 IS weighs 2/3rds of that.

Similar reason why you want both a 70-200/2.8 and a 100-300/2.8.

Looks like an internal zoom lens that may also be par-focal. Videographers will delight at retaining focus whilst changing focal length. My 28-70 f2 has huge focus breathing, and is very heavy. This new lens has the tripod collar lens foot indicating that it may be even heavier, definitely way more than the RF 24-70 f2.8 at just under a kilo, could be in the 1400-1500 gram (3 to 3.3 lb) range?

No. I don't even want to talk about it anymore.

Somebody needs to infiltrate Canon and find out who really hates 50 mm 1.4s. or just 1.4 is in general.

Take of those guys to a nice lunch... Let him spill the beans.

Pretty much every manufacturer came out with one this year except them. It's infuriating and one of the reasons why I haven't bought a single RF lens. It's like you're screwing with me as a customer so I'm not giving them any more money for lenses.*
