Canon to announce 5 new lenses on October 30

Any word on the newly designed extenders? My travel plans for next include me using the RF 100-500mm and I’ll probably need one (or two) extenders. Since I don’t like the current extenders on the 100-500mm that would be a nice surprise for me. I don’t believe it is coming now but I am hoping for Q1/2 in 2025
The standard 1.4 and 2x extenders are on an approximate 10 year cycle based on EF and RF release cycles (EF I: 1987, EF II: 2001, EF III: 2011, RF: 2020), so I would be surprised to see any before 2028 or so.

I am also not sure the zoomable extender is coming anytime soon, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

As a wedding videographer, the 24/1.4 VCM and 50/1.4 VCM are intriguing for my gimbal work.

As a wedding photographer, I'm still tearing my hair out wondering if I should go ahead and buy the (now old-ish) 28-70/2.0 or wait for them to announce a successor given it's been 6 years.

Yeah, I’m really in need of an update to my M1 MBP that I foolishly optioned with base RAM and 1TB of storage four years ago. Not looking forward to that, but the 0% financing of the Apple Card is very helpful.
I almost always get more than the base spec (I get the larger display, so that usually adds a CPU/etc. bump by default over the base smaller display models), that's even more important now that everything is soldered to the logic board. I had a mid-2010 17" core i7, and though I did opt for the 7200 rpm version of the 500 GB HDD at purchase, when I eventually installed a 1 TB SSD instead that was a great improvement. That was the penultimate 17" model and I used that Mac until they came out with the 16" MBP in 2019, and that is what I'm typing this on, core i9 with a 1 TB SSD.

I'll definitely get a 16", still somewhat debating on the Pro vs Max flavors, if they mirror the M3 chips then I'll probably get the M4 Max and bump the memory to 64 GB and the storage to 2 TB. External storage is relatively cheap, and I keep RAWs older than 5 years and the 4K versions of home movies on a pair of SSDs and a local NAS but not on my internal storage, so even my current 1 TB drive has ~300 GB free. But I prefer to keep ~15% free so really that's only 150 GB, thus the desire for 2 TB on the next one.

Woow, that sounds quite powerful :) I got a new MacBook Pro this month. I opted for the 14 inch, M3 with 24 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. So far, it is a great update over my mid 2018 MacBook Pro. I can actually take all my RAWs from the R5, put them on the Mac and browse through them via preview. My 2018 Mac (i5 I guess and 16 GB ram) was at a point where it couldn't handle those files (if it ever was able to do so). It makes my workflow sooo much faster and convenient, I love it! Before that, I usually browsed through the pics using Canons Camera connect app with the iPad but I didn't like it that much. This is much simpler and more enjoyable.

Since the MacBook Pro is on my "tax depreciation" (is that the correct term?) for five years, I opted not to get a M3 pro or Max because I think it'll stand its ground until then. After five years, I sell this one and get a new one.

Last month I also upgraded my iPad. When on travels I like to take just my iPad and edit pics on LR. I only had 11 GB left of my 256 GB, so I was kind of looking for one with more storage capacity because putting RAWs on the iPad takes up a loooot of storage space. The new iPads are sooooo expensive when you add storage to them, it is just not worth it. Then I found a 2021 iPad with M1, 16 GB RAM and 2 TB storage on "asgoodasnew" claiming the iPad was "new". I doubted that but it turned out to be true! I even got 3 months of Apple TV and AppleCare is still available (never purchased it before. Is it worth it?). The best thing: the iPad cost me 799 €, I upgraded to M1 (I had the 2020 model with A something chip) and rebuy bought my old iPad for nearly 500 €. So, 300 € investment, 8times the storage, upgrade on the chip and ram. Best deal ever :)

Thx for the info. I had no clue on what cycle they were. I´d wish for a RF extender mkii with the capability to use it on the RF 100-500mm across the entire zoom range. But I fear that this issue can't be fixed my a mkii converter and it would take a RF 100-500mm mkii which I'll probably never purchase. Unless... (*fillinwishedspecsformkiirf100-500mm) :)

I mean 24mm 1.4 is not the worst for landscape/astro, no?
We'll see what the reviews on coma/vignetting show.
24mm is a bit narrow for me. 20mm portrait shots will just get the horizon and the milky way in one row if the milky way has come down to the horizon a bit otherwise it means 2 rows to stitch (time/file size/stitching accuracy etc).
Similarly, 24mm field of view would be a bit small for a single shot. Anything from 14-20mm would be ideal.

RF 28mm f/1.4L... don't care about the focus motor.... But come on... 24 is too wide and 35 is boring

The EF 28mm sigma is one of the worst designed lenses ever made.

The difference between 24mm and 28mm is enormous. I don't get why Canon won't do it, The 28 mm on the Leica q series saved them.

Yes, I'll continue to cry. :D

I had to get the 1TB model with my M1 max/32GB RAM as it was off-the-shelf during the first week as my existing 7 year old MBP trackpad had basically died.
1TB means offloading to external drives often if I don't finish video/stills projects quickly which is annoying. Carrying around a fast external SSD would be just as painful.

My current machine is going okay with R5 sized files but more speed is always welcome. Raw panoramas are ~1GB and PS editing needs a lot of scratch disk. GoPro 4k files for a day's diving is 24GB by themselves before I severely trim them. Regularly have 100GB of stills when shooting a karate grading before culling.

My main decision will be to either wait for an OLED screen in 2026 and manage until then or upgrade with my bonus in March.
32GB RAM should be okay. I can't see a justification for 64GB (yet).
Trade in value will still be good. No Apple cards here.

The RF 50 VCM is locked in to buy. I honestly can’t wait for that lens now after extended use of the RF 35 VCM’s autofocus.

Curious about the 70-200 and the mystery lens. The 24-105 f/2.8 is the best lens Canon has ever made, if you ask me. I can already see a 70-200 bringing that same level of performance and user experience. Video production is much more important to me now and the current 70-200 is fantastic until you have to zoom while recording. Not to mention that it’s compatible with teleconverters?
the 0% financing of the Apple Card is very helpful dangerous. :)
Haha yeahhhh, it can be, but I love it when you consider these clowns charge $200 for 1GB of extra storage!

Unless you use multi-stream ProRes video heavily and would benefit from the extra media engine, the Pro vs Max is almost certainly a wash. For the creatives we managed Macs for, we've always done a 2.5-3yr upgrade cycle but always bought mid-tier.

From a TCO perspective, and a functional speed during use perspective, I'd presume you would have been far better off spending less in 2019 then upgrading in the latter half of 2021, then surplus it and upgrade again in 2024. You'd have had a massively faster machine from 2021 to 2024 and close performance from 2019 - 2020.

16" MBP - 12/16 - 36GB - 2TB - $3499
16" MBP - 16/40 - 64GB - 2TB - $4599

Functionally for photography you'd be hard pressed to find the difference. I tested heavily before buying mine. I actually went with a 12/16 - 18GB - 1TB.

If it were me, I'd drop the $1100 you're spending on the MAX and extra 32GB of memory into the S&P Index, wait 30 months then sell my M3 Pro and buy the equivalent 2026 mid-tier 16".

That’s sort of why my work Mac is an M1 Pro – I had a fraternal twin of my personal 16” i9 (only the color differed) that had a RAM module fail a day before I was leaving for a conference, and Apple needed 3-5 days for the ‘repair’ (logic board replacement, free with AppleCare+), so I bought one off the shelf.

1TB means offloading to external drives often if I don't finish video/stills projects quickly which is annoying. Carrying around a fast external SSD would be just as painful.
Your projects are much bigger than mine. My 4K videos are typically of short performances (<8 min). R3 files are smaller and I rarely come home with >1000 RAWs from a day’s shooting

32GB RAM should be okay. I can't see a justification for 64GB (yet).
It’s a want more than a need. I typically run a Mac for 6-8 years, so more is usually better.

Trade in value will still be good.
I’ve never traded one in. So far, they’ve been handed down to family members, except for one of my kids’ 2019 MacBook Airs where the butterfly keyboard slowly failed to register key presses (after the recall period), then the display backlight started failing and the key caps started melting.

Her older sister has the same model in silver, that still works fine).

At some point soon, I’ll make up for not trading in Macs with a vengeance. I have a stack of 13” MBPs (8-9) bought for my employees but replaced with turnover, and once my IT contractor unenrolls them from the MDM, I’ll take them all in to my local Apple Store.

No Apple cards here.
I don’t have one. For me, 0% financing is the norm – I just pay my credit card in full every month (November will be a big chunk, with the MBP and the R1 both shipping).

That's a fair point and I'll consider it, thanks. The financials aren't much of a constraint for me (nice to have first world problems), the only concern I actually have about the Max chip is the reportedly higher level of fan noise at load compared to the Pro chip.
