CIPA 2024: The Rise of China and Compacts

China will inevitably make their own locally sourced/branded camera at some point.
In fact, this has already happened.
Exactly ,Xiaomi had released a MILC at 2014. XiaoYi M1(小蚁M1) ,using M43 mount with 20MP. After that, Xiaomi completely abandoned this series.
DJI is very likely to make their own MILC, only DJI has successfully manufactured FF CMOS, which was developed with a subsidiary of Changchun Institute of Optics in 2021, GPIXEL , this sensor have 19MP resolution. Of course, GPIXEL also has medium format sensors and global shutter sensors, but these are all for industrial use.
Chinese SNS generally believes that DJI and Xiaomi are much more likely to (re)enter the MILC market than Huawei, since Huawei is a telecommunications company, while MILC is a niche market.
PS: Huawei now using sensor from OmniVision , I never heard OmniVision had manufactured sensor bigger than 1/1.28''.

The thing about Osmo and drones is that they are primarily video and secondarily stills. That isn't a blocking issue but it is a different space and clearly MILCs are closer to video (EVF/AF) even though stills are the primary feature.

Yes, DJI (or GoPro for that matter) could put together a compact camera/fixed lens and it would be an interesting to see what they could do with it.

But video is where the market it headed. Instagram, a social media site built around sharing pictures, now focuses on video. Tik Tok, Facebook, YouTube, etc. are all primarily focused on video.

This is the advantage that DJI has and the achillies heel of the Japanes, temperment to change. The Japanes are essentially rushing to put the best video specs in a body that was designed ages ago for stills. They essentaily take a big body and larger sensor and then crop into that sensor for stable usable video. Meanwhile DJI stuck a smaller sensor in a unique body that is more suited to todays needs and included a gimbal so there is no need to crop in on the sensor.

So if you look at videos comparing the OP3's 1" sensor to the R50 or ZV-E10 apsc sensor you get better video results if you're not in a static environment. Which is why you see the OP3 selling 15 times more than those cameras on Amazon even though they cost similar.

Just look how different these 2 cameras look. The OP3 lens can move in any direction. You can switch from filming yourseld to filming others while holding the camera in the same position. Same for switching from horizontal to vertical video, you simply flick the screen in the position you want without moving the camera. If DJI figures out how to get a larger sensor in this thing, watch out.

I think this line part from the article highlights the misconceptions about what's happening:

A lot of the increase in "compact" cameras is the the Fuji X100V. However this IS NOT a compact camera. CIPA doesn't track "compact" cameras they track "fixed lens" cameras. People are using these categories interchangeably, but that is incorrect. The Fuji X100VI is an apsc camera with a fixed lens.
I fail to see why X100V is not a compact camera. There is no rule that compact cameras should have a small sensor. Classic compact cameras from the 1970s like Canon GIII QL used 35 mm film. A compact camera is a fixed lens camera. A compact camera is not a pocket camera,.

Exactly, which is why CIPA calls them ‘Camera with Built-in Lens’.

I'm highlighting that the trait of the camera is "Fixed Lens" and not the size of the cameras. You can see the conversation was about cameras like the M series, R50 and R100 all of which are interchangable lenses. They are focusing on the "Size" of the camera, when in fact what is popular is a simplisttic cameras that has a fixed lens.
