Geotagging

I use the R5 with Canon Camera Connect and when it works, it's good. Unfortunately, it often doesn't work for me. Mostly when I forget to open the app before a trip, or when I switch the camera on/off a lot.

Purely as a last resort backup, I can recommend the app "myTracks - The GPS logger" (https://www.mytracks4mac.info/en/) in "Dairy" mode. This does 24/7 low power tracking based only on iOS location data, i.e. it's not precise but uses no additional battery. Similar to what Google Maps "location history" does, but days can be easily exported as GPX files.

It's been extremely reliable and has survived reboots and updates without issue. Lifesaver if all else fails.

It can of course also do precise tracking but then it uses battery, like all the hundreds of apps out there that can do that. Many are suitable, I suggest you test a few yourself.

Or buy / use a hardware GPS logger, or use a Garmin watch, etc.

Important: Are you planning to actually add the tags on your phone as well? The one you mentioned also does tagging. If so, note that most apps don't actually "bake" the tags into the file's EXIF on iOS, but instead only add the tags as metadata in the iCloud photo library. Adding a location in the "Photos" app is the same. Which is totally fine unless you plan export the originals at some point (macOs -> Photos -> Export Unmodified Originals). Then all that metadata is lost because it's not baked into the original EXIF. I actually happen to use the older app "Geotag Photos GPX" from the same developer you mentioned (https://www.geotagphotos.net/geotag-photos-tagger) and it only modifies the iOS metadata, not the EXIF.

A better way to apply geotags from GPX files to photos is to do it on a computer, where you can be sure and verify that the tags are "baked into" the EXIF of the actual file. Again, many options for that available.

A couple of things about Camera Connect:
It's important to exclude it from any VPN or cookie/tracker blocking utilities or turn them off before using it.
Occasionally, the camera settings revert from wifi/Bluetooth enabled

I've had mostly good luck with Camera Connect. As an alternative, if you use a Mac and use a tracking app / GPS device to generate a track, Houdahgeo is a good app for subsequently tagging the images. It can work both on images already in the Photos library or direct from a folder and bakes the data into the original image file.
