Hi everyone,
Earlier this year, my wife and I took our 1.5-year-old daughter on a two-week trip to Italy. Our itinerary included Rome, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, and back to Rome. Since we had visited these locations before, we felt confident returning with our daughter for her first major international trip, knowing the lay of the land.
The last time we visited was in 2021, during the height of Covid. That trip was one of our best because fewer people were traveling, and Venice was especially peaceful. Even during peak hours, the crowds never became overwhelming. However, in 2024, tourism had fully rebounded, and we noticed a significant increase in prices, especially for accommodations and food. Despite that, we still had a fantastic time, and my wife was very patient with my usual photography routines, even with our daughter in tow.
Below are some of my favorite photos from the trip (in no particular order). I shot nearly 14,000 images and edited down to over 600 keepers. My routine was to get up before sunrise, explore each city for interesting scenes, and return by 8-9 AM to join my wife and daughter for the day. In the evenings, I’d go out again to capture more photos.
Having our daughter with us did limit my daytime photography, but I’m still pleased with many of the shots I got.
Here’s the gear I used on the trip (all insured, of course):
R3
R5
EF 11-24 f/4L
EF 24-70 f/2.8L II
EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II
RF 50 f/1.2L
RRS TVC 34L
Acratech GP Ballhead
EF-RF Control Ring Adapter
EF-RF ND/Polarizer adapter
LEE Big and Super Stoppers
DJI gimbal
My favorite camera on this trip was, without a doubt, the R3. Even though it has a lower resolution, it was simply more enjoyable to use. I kept Eye Control on most of the time, and it was so quick at focusing exactly where I wanted that I didn’t even need to use the joystick to adjust the focus point. Every time I switched back to my R5, I found myself frustrated that it wasn’t focusing where I was looking.
The R3’s sensor was also impressive. I shot exclusively with the electronic shutter and was blown away by its dynamic range and how much detail the 24 MP sensor could capture. It definitely outperforms older 24 MP sensors by a noticeable margin.
Hope you all enjoy my photos! I have other images that I've posted on my Instagram, for those that are interested: https://www.instagram.com/hadrianrobinsonphotos/
