Pushing Boundaries: Canon to Announce First-Ever Fast Wide Prime Lens

Since a 14mm F1.4 already exist, I’d guess either a 12mm f1.4 or 16mm f1.4. The latter won’t be as exciting and some may claim it is not “a world first” (because 14mm f1.4 is even wider) in marketing terms the wording is correct.

Hope I am right with 12mm because I guessed it several times

I am quite happy with the 20/1.4 VCM that came yesterday (my mini review here, including coma/astigmatism).

It will be interesting and good for many things (except perhaps my wallet) if Canon comes out with an even wider f/1.4 lens. I bought the 24, then the 20, and if I buy one that’s even wider I guess I would say, “Well played, Canon…well played.”

There is no 14 f/1.4. Sigma has the 14 f/1.8 ART which worked great on the 5D4. I really hope this lens is a 14mm or wider f/1.4. Just picked up the 24 VCM so I can sell my 24 STM.

There is a Sigma 14mm F1.4 but it is only available for e- and L-mount. It was released in June 2023.

This sound interesting! I have no idea although I assume we're not talking about my precious 35 1.2
Depending on the specs it may be something for me after quite a long drought

Maybe a typo: isn't the EF 8-15mm an f/4L? not an f/2.8L

Yep… typo. The ef8-15mm is f4. I have used it for some Astro comps at 8mm successfully. Gives a unique perspective!

A monster lens but so many features for wide angle astro!
I am torn to whether I would prefer a small/light 14/1.8 like the Sony or the sigma 14/1.4. My sigma 20/1.4 is huge and heavy.

The original post saying that it:
‘This won’t be a small lens’
Is based on? What are the patents saying for length and number of elements?
Canon basically made the ef11-24/4 obsolete with the RF10-20/4 showing they can make big reductions.
The Sony 14/1.8 is only 1lb and 4x4” albeit with a smaller front element than a f1.4 would be.

A 12mm would be a pretty extreme focal length!

I appreciate camera manufacturer smack talk. But "First Ultrawide Fast Prime" I'd go with the Sigma 14 mm f/1.8 as the first. Looks like that was ~2017.

So are they wider than that? Faster, well, as others have pointed out the Sigma 14 mm f/1.4 exists. Just not in in RF mount.

Sadly, I bet the disclaimer is first UWA Fast Prime*

*(on RF mount)

Regardless, in the 12-17 mm range and faster than f/2, I will look at and strongly consider this lens. UWA night scape lens is a hole in my kit. Granted, that hole is getting smaller and may become mostly filled with the RF 20 f/1.4

Technically, the 20/1.4 is already an ultrawide, fast prime since it's <24mm. But probably you're correct, but "A World’s First Fast Ultra-Wide" with the qualifier as 'for the RF mount' would be pretty lame. I hope they really do come out with a world's first. A 10mm f/1.8, 12mm f/1.4, a TS-E 14mm f/2, or something like that.

True. The disclaimer is getting bigger and bigger. *(on RF mount and, ummm, please ignore the 20 f/1.4)

I will wade back into the waters of upgrades if this lens is released. Been sitting on my money for awhile waiting for this lens or something in an L telephoto zoom (200-500, etc.). Would love it to be a 14 f 1.4 with good corners. I use my Sigma Art quite a bit for astro and it does well.

Given Sigma already has a 14 f 1.4 in the market I assume world first will mean either faster, wider or tilt shift.

Bring it on!

A new RF TS would be my next whining darling after they release the 35 1.2 :ROFLMAO:
