I had noticed that all the f/1.4 lenses use a 67mm filter thread. So your comment makes me suspect they chose 67mm because it's large enough for 60.7mm needed for 85mm f/1.4. Is that reasonable?

Seems reasonable to me. IIRC, this was discussed before and there was some discussion about the EF 85/1.4 using a 77mm filter but of course the front element doesn't go to the edge of the barrel.

I am quite happy with the 20/1.4 VCM that came yesterday (my mini review here, including coma/astigmatism).

It will be interesting and good for many things (except perhaps my wallet) if Canon comes out with an even wider f/1.4 lens. I bought the 24, then the 20, and if I buy one that’s even wider I guess I would say, “Well played, Canon…well played.”

Less than 6 months ago, the 24mm f/1.4L VCM.

But historically, my answer for that would be 3rd party lenses. Canon has made 'a' bodies (20Da, 60Da, Ra) but seems to not have made minimizing coma and astigmatism a priority until the 24/1.4 and 20/1.4 VCM lenses.

Canon has never released a fast prime wider than 24mm (prior to the 20/1.4 VCM which is kind of meh), and has never released a truly excellent ultra-wide prime. It's always been a weak point. Will be interesting to see what they release and how it compares to the 14/1.8GM and 14/1.4DG.
