Update on the Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM

Am I the only found these low-res pics looks way too close to the Sony lenses.....I doubt Canon will copy Sony and put a circle custom button in-between zoom ring and focus ring.

I pray for internal zoom ....Canon is willing to give nano USM to us...so please keep our hopes/hypes high

Why did my interest in this lens leap forward when I saw it would come in white? Can't be Veblenesque conspicuous consumption...No...it's, uh, just that I'm concerned with heat management when shooting on hot sunny days.

As we all know, Canon know the market FAR BETTER than we the humble masses do. How could they ever under estimate what the demand will be. There is very little reason they won't be able to meet the demand.
Hard to see if you are being sarcastic or not....
Canon regularly has stock on back order. It is one thing to have sufficient stock for the release of a product and another to have ongoing manufacturing runs to meet demand after pre-orders are filled.

Personally, I'm waffling on this lens. The 100-500L with a 1.4x performs very well and is a 420-700/8-10, which isn't too far off of this lens. Will this lens be smaller or lighter? Doesn't look like it. Optically better? Maybe, but probably not or it would have a red ring.
I think a choice between the 100-500L that you already have and another $2K for this is kind of a slam-dunk non-choice. The real market is guys like me who can't spring for the L glass, but would like to have a decent telephoto. For a consumer model, the RF100-400 is a fantastic lens, and I don't regret a single penny of the $650 I paid for it. If this lens is anywhere near that IQ, it's going to be a popular one. $2,000 is a little bit beyond my normal means, but it gives me a lot to think about. I have the RF600, which I just am not happy with for a few reasons. (One being that in practical use, I realize that I should've purchased the 800.) I've been considering selling the 600 and getting the 800. Now I will be thinking about scraping some extra pennies together to get this lens instead. Especially if the IQ makes this a good compliment to the 100-400.

If it has a zoom tension ring, then I hope it gets tighter than the one on my RF100-500. It does seem to tighten much at all.
Hmm…mine tightens quite a bit on my copy. My friend’s as well. I honestly can’t remember how my EF 100-400 II was, though, if that’s your comparison point.

$1800USD will be ideal...

White lens without a red ring. Color me surprised. Weather sealing? I predicted no, maybe I'm wrong about that, too.

I'll have a look at the actual specs when it's announced and decide whether to preorder it (alongside the RF 24-105/2.8L).
My rule has always been to pre-order and then watch/read all the reviews leading up to the lens’ release when your card is actually charged. I personally don’t see a need to own this lens for my professional work, but it’s almost a dream come true for what I WANT in a lens in my backyard taking bird photos and such. The 100-500 with the 1.4X does a marvelous job and is easy to throw in the bag for trips. So I totally understand waffling on this one…but you may regret not at least getting in line for one if it turns out to be the best birding/wildlife lens Canon offers under $2800. This entire point would be moot if the 100-500 would accept TCs at all focal lengths…making me think this was allllll deliberate. Haha jk

If the patent thought to represent this lens is correctly associated, it will be just like the 100-500 – compatible with extenders starting at about 400mm but not throughout the range.
No, I mean I wouldn’t really have any serious interest in this lens if the 100-500 was more streamlined and straightforward to use with teleconverters. (If it could be a 140-700 instead of having to be zoomed out to 300mm to accept them.)

I personally don’t see myself using a TC on this lens and lose even more light, unless it’s simply for the novelty “what if” factor.

Canon openly admitted that they underestimated the demand for the RF 100-300mm f2.8, so they do get it wrong occasionally.

I am certain the photo is genuine, and it matches what YouTube bird photographer Jan Wegner said about the lens some weeks back, and he wasn't going by either the rumour sites or patents, but what he'd been told by people who'd seen it. He said it would be white. Anyway, we'll all know for certain tomorrow, and I'm certain the lens will look like this. Remember, this lens is out there, has been tested for some time. All the reviewers will have had the lens, and already done their reviews on it. But they will have signed NDAs, which is why those leaking these photos, have to disguise where they were photographed. Often these leaks are confirmed by multiple sources, who have actually seen and handled the lens.
