What do people want to see in the Canon EOS R1? PetaPixel gives their thoughts

Price tag aligned with the other flagships and increased low light performance. I am ok with 45-50MP and maybe some improvement with the AF. Lastly minimal time lag between the official announcement, ordering and receipt of the camera.

Everything sounds reasonable.
Personally, I would still prefer a mechanical shutter.
But if you have no more rolling shutter issues because of global shutter and if s/n isn't differing from continuous operation to mechanical shutter operation, the only reason for a mechanical shutter would be to protect the sensor.

For sensor protection, a specialized mechanism (like in the Z9) is better than the shutter. It can have stronger blades (harder to damage) and can be a simpler mechanism because does not need to move with speed and precision like a shutter.

And zero lag although experienced members like Alan have mentioned tricks to mitigate lag I would prefer a close to zero lag.
It's like so many quirks these cameras have, you learn to work around them. One of these days, they might get everything right.

With it being delayed as long as it has Canon has to have something incredible to justify it. If they just release their version of a A1/Z9 I think disappointment would be justified. Quad pixel AF I think is a serious possibility. I doubt we’ll see a global shutter; the technology isn’t there yet. I could see them pushing the scan rate higher than either of Nikon or Sony’s stacked sensors. 1/500th of a second would be really impressive for both rolling shutter performance and flash sync. If the scan time is that quick, I could definitely see them releasing it without a mechanical shutter.

My wishlist would be the following:

1) A stacked or global 40-45 MP sensor
2) Quad Pixel AF
3) Dual CFExpress Type B cards
4) Increased buffer over the R3
5) 30 fps is enough for me in terms of frame rate so I am more than happy if the R1 can shoot 40-45 MP at 30 fps with full 14 bit RAW files
6) Keep the R3 ergonomics along with the R3s low weight. Do not go back to the 1Dx Mk2 brick.
7) Instead of the screen that flips out build one like the Fuji GFX100S.
8) Spot metering linked to AF point.

That is all I can think at this moment in time.

Aside from what you hear on rumor sites and from YouTube influencers who have no actual knowledge, what makes you think it was delayed? It is right on schedule, as a series one camera, to be released in an Olympic year a few months before the games.
So Canon needs not have "something incredible". And, since camera tech is really reaching a point of leveling off, it seems unlikely that we will see anything "incredible" in any new release going forward, just as their has been nothing "incredible" in the mark II's of any mirrorless brand.

I'm a concert photographer and I absolutely need a mechanical shutter. Electronic shutters just don't work well with the onstage LED screens--they tear up and show ghastly artifacts. Even when I sync the electronic shutter speed to the refresh rate of the screen, the resulting image still looks worse than what a mechanical shutter produces. Not to say that the mechanical shutter is perfect, but electronic shutter is downright unusable when an LED screen is present. If the R1 gets rid of the mech. shutter, I will need to stay with my R3.

What about Elec. 1st curtain? Does that give you the same issues as full electronic?

I'm not the target market for a R1, but a wish list that I put together a year ago seems "reasonable"
To justify a higher pricetag, the R1 will need to hit a different level than A1/Z9/R3/R5ii/R5C. The R1 should include features that lower level bodies currently have eg pre-shutter buffer. Besides a couple of things (global shutter, QPAF), all of them are currently technically possible and components available.

Besides what has already been mentioned: R3 body, no overheating, QPAF, on the fly lossless "RAW" (however defined eg SW, pixel binned etc) stills at different sizes, global shutter (or equivalent), OLED tilt/swivel rear screen, dual CFe type B, AF-on smart controller, spot meter/AF aligned, flexible burst speed, ethernet, wifi 6, gps, CLOG2, advanced hotshoe, eye-control AF....

Stills:
~80mp sensor with IBIS (Same pixel density as R7. IBIS can be turned off independent of lens OIS. Ideal size for pixel binning.)
Mechanical shutter will be retained but bring back the 16fps one from the 1DXiii rather than the 12fps one in the R3. Not sure why Canon didn't include it in the R3.
Same electronic shutter burst rates as in R3 (up to 195fps with deeper buffer)
Flash sync substantially <1/200s (and HSS faster still). A1 has 1/320 for FF and 1/400 for crop. Z9 is 1/200
9+ megadot EFV with no blackout and fast refresh rates (at least 120fps). >0.5" in size (magnification >0.76 from R3)
Improved processor efficiency and/or higher capacity battery (lower line width, dual processor/bus potentially for heat spread etc)
2 x USB-C: thunderbolt (recording/tethering) + power
IBIS related SW: Pixel shift internally generated "raw" file, astro tracking mode, horizon leveling images within IBIS limitations

Video: (no separate video version as 1D-C or R5C
Cinema menus
DCI 12k30 full raw internal recording to CFe and external via HDMI and/or USB-C
Oversampled: 8K60, 4k120, FHD240
Full sized HDMI 2.1 port (will support 12k output)
C70 will still have a different form factor. R5C will be smaller and less capable.

Would love to see 60+ MP. Quad-pixel AF. Same size as R3. Metering on AF point. More advanced top screen. 4K RAW option for video rather than down sampling of 8K; maybe they can offer multiple RAW video options like they plan to with the stills. Fix the cooling issues for longer recording. I personally like the mechanical shutter sound and feel; the fake sounds don’t do it for me, but I get it if we go full electronic. Global shutter would be cool. Longer battery life despite all the upgrades. Just make it a beast for winter shooting in the Rockies, both stills and video, and I’ll be a happy customer.
