It's easiest to get caught up in the specifications that we know what they are, but from this video it becomes obvious that a lot of forum members have no idea at all what is actually important to people who will use the R1 and similar cameras.

Yes, both are 14-bit.
The R1 has a much larger buffer.
The buffer basically never gets full.

I've mentioned this topic ("motion trap") a few times before on various threads and I've seen others mention it on this site it as well.
I've never been able to write Canon and get any response back. If you know how I might be able to do this (and get any kind of acknowledgment that someone actually read it) then please let me know and I'll try it.

A lot comments here based on careless reading and baseless inferences.
1. Cable did not mention the R3 or directly compare it to the R1.
2. The R3 was still in beta when he used it at the "2020" Olympics in 2021
3. Despite this, according to what he wrote in his blog at the time, he used the R3 that entire Olympics because the AF was that much better than his R5 which is originally intended to use.
4. Keepers to him may not be what "keepers" to others mean to people on this board.
5. He is not affiliated with Canon in any way -- he does have other sponsors. Canon/CPS loans cameras and lenses to anyone with Olympics photo credentials. I'm not sure where people are getting there is quid pro quo here, i.e., the marketing comments.
R1 is not my kind of camera. I'm a R5II guy. But confused why people are annoyed Cable believes the R1 is Canon's finest camera yet. To me it bodes well for my incoming R5II.

How does your keeper rate with the R1 that you’ve borrowed from Canon at the Olympics compare with the gear you used at the last Olympics?

I'm always impressed / amazed by folks willing to use pre-production equipment in such at high stakes event. Jeff Cable kind of excepted, since he seems to have a month plus with the camera, but it feels like a big risk. Not that the files wouldn't come out, but I'm pretty sensitive to muscle memory and really understanding the settings & limitations of camera in a really fast paced game.
But maybe most people are doing what he also does and shooting new gear on secondary/practice/fun events that they're not necessarily being paid for. I suppose if I could check out an R1 for a day, I also probably couldn't resist the temptation, sensibilities be dammed.

Funny dumb American moment: I was looking at some more recent Jeff Cable blog entries, and I was noticing the ball in his shots was completely oblong, as though there was terrible rolling shutter. He mentioned he'd been using the R1. I was horrified at how terrible the rolling shutter seemed. Took me two minutes of closely looking at shots to remember that Rugby balls aren't round.
