The Canon EOS R1 Hits The Fastest Readout Speed We've Seen

No... Canon still doesn't have a Speedlite lineup that makes any sense. That word applies!
Nowadays Godox is the most popular option. I can see why all Japanese 1st parties gave up making it.
I'll only be writing once or twice week now though. Lots of new guest writers you all know and respect, as well as some new knowledge to bring to CR that I don't have.

So I may be a bit more snarky going forward, but it's in good fun. Except for that 75-300 :p
Are we going to get the R100+RF75-300 epic review
The R1's 4k120fps is not fully sampled, ie not oversampled, so its readout speed for that mode isn't really applicable or comparable since each system that doesn't oversample uses a different sub-sampling algorithm (line skipping, binning, etc..).
There's no one able to make a 4k120 oversampled MILC, asking for that is a bit wishful.

This article doesn't sound at all neutral, almost more like a Canon marketing blurb. And even threatening to delete posts relating to certain critical topics.
I prefer more balanced, neutral reporting on any matter, including on Canons flagship.
I am not sure about you, but the site is Canon rumors. In my mind, I expect more enthusiasm towards Canon. If I want neutrality, I would go and read newspaper; they are supposed to rely on hard data. I appreciate critical minds, but if its result is discouraging others to do what they are supposed to do, I find it to be in the wrong place. Again, I come here for rumors and Canon enthusiasm. Sorry to disagree with you.

I purchased the R1 at launch and compared it at length to my Sony A9III. For my use the Sony is the better camera. Much more travel friendly, better AF, No overheating, better third party support, superior IBIS.

Not to say the Canon was bad, but in every practical way, it felt essentially the same as my R3.

As for readout speed… nothing is faster than the A9III.
You may be the first person I’ve ever seen claim the A9III has better AF and IBIS than the R1. I suppose it all depends on what you do and what you shoot. But I’ve never seen anyone make this claim in any direct comparison.

Well, the 75-300 just *had* to come over, it is the ultimate beginners' telephoto. The same basic lens has been in the lineup for decades, with all of the same faults. However, I will say that it gives beginners a lesson in learning where their limits vs the limits of the equipment fall. To quote the late, great, M. Reichmann - "Most lenses are better than most photographers." The long end of the 75-300 provides the exception that proves the rule. :)

I happen to own both and have shot them side by side for BIF with pretty high end glass (R1 + 100-300L + 2xTC vs A9III + 300GM + 2xTC).

The R1 is better at initial focus acquisition of smaller objects in frame than the A9III, which had a hard time picking a bird out if it is too small.

Once acquisition happens, tracking hit rates are similar, but the A9III maintains that hit rate percentage at 120 fps while the R1 tops out at 40 fps, so you end up with more keepers (useful for things like capturing the exact right pose when a bird takes off from a branch) but of course you run out of buffer space much faster.

The R1 has ECAF, which is great if it works for you especially when trying to quickly pick something specific out when there are multiple possible AF targets in the frame.

So I think they have broadly similar performance, and it really depends on the use case.

Yeah, I use my R1 handheld in 4k120p with the 14-35mm f/4 to do video tours of office spaces. Now granted I\'m not walking down a hallway with it, rather I do handheld pans, short dollies, and tilts...and between the IBIS and 120fps, get very very smooth shots for the client when slowed down to 30fps on the edit timeline. Oh and it takes great photos too! ha ha. Love it matched with the 100-300 for corporate events and sports.

Yeah I heard the EL-1 is hard to get, but honestly from my real world experience...its the best on-camera flash I've EVER experienced on any system. I use it matched with a phottix Laso (with profoto connect pro mounted) to trigger profoto lights around large rooms. Though I am kicking around the idea of picking up a profoto a10 (or whatever the latest version of that speedlight is) to be able to more reliably trigger the profotos directly...but not sure how good the ETTL is on the profoto a10 vs the EL-1. Rather, its a $1000 experiment I guess unless I rent one to try.

I think the biggest issue with the R1 is the R3. If the later had not been made I think more people would have been wowed by it. I think Canon have got a problem though in they need to get away from the old philosophy of the DSLR era where lower megapixel to prioritise fire rate and R-WR speed. Nikon and Sony have shown you can move away from this thinking.
I do disagree with the notion the Sony A9iii has better AF.
The last time I tried the R1 the AF was ridiculous, it would not let go of subjects. The one area I hope this goes further is wildlife especially with those in trees/bushes etc to control losing focus on to branches etc.
I have high hopes we may get a high MP version more aimed at wildlife shooters at some point. I do hope they steal with pride from Nikon on the sensor cover and ditching the mechanical shutter.
