I'd call it luck or, better, clumsiness.
I didn't want to scare up the heron. That's the opposite of my ethos, shooting wildlife.
At least I had the reflex to pull the trigger, when it took off.

BIF is decidedly not my forte but there were lots of singing skylarks yesterday, and they can hover in place for long enough even to frame at 1600mm.

R6, RF 800 f/11 + 2x; all 1600mm, 1/1250sec, f/22, ISO 4000.

which is why I didn't use it first - I had to remove one frame which was the worst. The only time I find rolling shutter to be a problem is when panning in front of verticals. You wouldn't notice it, however, in a single shot.

The advantage of a zoom lens! The heron started suddenly and I had to zoom out quickly to keep the whole bird in the frame.

It's just adding to the drama: "Peregrine Falcon flying off tower carrying pigeon - in the middle of earthquake". I like it better than the gif!
