Canon EOS R1 Spotted in the wild at the Monaco GP

It's a nice niche camera. But flagship? 24MP can't be your flagship in 2020 . . . much much less 2024. Heck, iPhones are over 40MP these days! (Even APPLE knows 24MP isn't enough anymore!) This is an embarrassment. Worst of all . . . Canon KNEW you couldn't have a 24MP "flagship" four years ago! Why was the original R1 labeled "R3"? Why did they deny the "R3" was their flagship? Because every other manufacturers' "flagship" has twice the resolution.

You can talk "benefits of a low res sensor" all day . . . but it's an excuse. No amount of AI can give a low res image the beauty and detail of a 45MP image. Just not possible.

Maybe Canon has different ideas for the R3 and R1 going forward. It's not everything about resolution.

It is interesting that Sony as well as Canon differentiates their top cameras (A1 vs. A9) and (R1 vs. R5) with different resolution while the Nikon Z9 and Z8 have the same resolution. I am not bashing any manufacturer, but just pointing out the obvious.
Nikon has the Z7.
What they do not have is an a9 III competitor.
In the same sense, neither Canon or Sony will have a true Z 9 competitor.
The a1 and R5 II would really compete against the Z 8.

I think if Canon launched the R3 at its current price ($4.5k), we won't even be having this conversation.
It would have been seen as an a9 II competitor.
Now that the a9 III was launched at the R3 launch price people might start comparing it to the R1.
The a1 is more expensive than the Z 9 but it really competes against the Z 8 and R5 II.
It will be interesting to see how the a1 II justifies being a flagship.
A global shutter would surely do the trick.

Not if the R5 II rumored specs are true.
It beats out the a1, Z 9, and Z 8.
IMHO the R1 also beats out the a9 III for most practical purposes.
Not sure what rumoured specs really beat out the A1, Z9, Z8? Maybe if the precapture is properly implemented that would beat them out. So far the only FF camera that does pre-capture right is the A9III.
FPS beat Z9/Z8 but not A1.
Resolution matches Z9/Z8 but is behind A1.
Rumored 30% over R3 sensor scan speed is slightly faster but all four cameras are so close to each other it will make no difference in actual results.

Otherwise the rumoured specs don't really show any major advancements compared to 3+ yo A1 and 2+ yo Z9.

A1II should be announced end of 2024 and available end of 2024 or early 2025 (essentially one year after the A9III). Z9II sometime next year?? Will the R5II just fall 4 years behind again or will Canon have something in there that will keep up with the updates to the other brand's top cameras? No idea, we shall see.

The 15.0V is the input (charging) voltage - not the battery voltage.

The batteries for the integrated vertical grips use 3 cells in series using LithiumIon chemistry, which is why you see 3 * 3.6-3.7V = 10.8V on the LP-E19 (R3) and 11.1V on the older LP-E4N (1Dx) batteries. The batteries for the other cameras used 2 cells in series, hence the 7.4V working voltage.
Thank you for explaining, i will update it in my list!

I am still holding out hope for an R1 S and also an R5 S.

Richard and I were talking about that today. If they continue the R3... do it with that, but in the smaller R3 body and not the R1. I'd hate to see the "3" disappear for decades again and it would be better than trying to sell a cripple hammered R1,

One can dream, that's all I am doing here.
