Canon officially introduces the Canon EOS R1 flagship mirrorless king

If someone could compare the exact difference in height of the R3 and R1 it would be greatly appreciated. I find the R3 compact size and low weight a huge advantage. R1 appears a bit taller.
Based on Richard's images, differences are minor. The R1 will be about 100.8 mm in height – 3.3 mm taller than the R3. The R1 is also about 1.5 mm wider.

Have to admit....a bit anticlimactic of an announcement.

"Something is coming that everyone already knows is coming!"

Yeah...the teaser info is not inspiring me to preorder. 'Action Priority' AF and better subject tracking are nice in theory, but for my current needs the R3 has no trouble tracking subjects. Better in-camera NR is something I neither need nor want. The statement, "...enables large volumes of data to be processed at high speeds," offers some hope but it depends on how those larger volumes of data are generated. The R3 can shoot 30 fps at 14-bits, with a RAW burst close to 200 fps. For me, 30 fps is more than enough (and too much in many cases).

I suspect we'll see a modest bump in MP count and a big bump in frame rate, e.g. 30 MP at 90-120 fps. While I don't feel I need more than the 24 MP, I'm not against it...for me, the ergonomics of the integrated grip far outweigh the benefits of more MP. But if the R1 gets a bigger bump in MP and a more modest bump in fps, that would make it more attractive to me.

Most attractive would be a techincal solution to the AF problems shared by most or all MILCs – lack of ability to detect horizontal lines (some manufacturers can, but not Canon) and inability to achieve focus lock starting from extreme defocus.

I’m still hoping for a contrast and image based fine-tuning at the last step of the AF process. That would avoid the ‘focusses on on the grass next to the eyes’ issues we’ve been experiencing.

Like the ‘Digic Accelerator’ mentioned in the press release?
Yeah but it will probably be used only on the R1 while the digic X was used on 1Dx mk3 annd after that it was introduced in the R5 and R6.
I was just hopeful that they will release a brand new processor technology that will be part of every upcoming camera. But who knows maybe they did and kept the name like they did with R3 and R6 mk2 processors.

yes it's taller and wider. If I had to guess 15mm taller and 10mm wider.

but I haven't scaled up the images to 1:1 and actually measured them. I may do that tomorrow in the linked document. it's a ongoing live document and there's more I'm going to add to it tomorrow and over the weekend including a comparison against the 1DX.
Thank you Richard, greatly appreciated.

If true, 30 MP is going to please a lot of people as a decent bump from the current 1 series sensor, although obviously not those that wanted >80MP. The new Digic X and accelerator chips must be stellar if they can get 1-series burst speeds out of a 30MP sensor.

Did anyone else get the impression that this "video" that uses a single still image and embellishes it with some text and smoke effects seemed like a poor, rushed production? My first impression was that I'd be rick rolled, and I needed to find the real Canon link. I've been wrong before, trying to read meaning into Canon bad creative choices. (I was the guy who was 100 percent sure the R5 wouldn't come out because the body pictured in the rumor post had 4 different fonts on it, and mixed serifs; so don't go by me). But this was poor.

The Adorama specs pretty much match this word for word.

Almost sounds like the (perhaps ex-) Adorama person asked an AI program to list the specs of the R1, it scraped the internet and produced an answer without mentioning the word 'rumour", and they just stuck it up on their site!

I think as time goes on they'll add to the video.

placeholder specs but yeah they could have just put "something" in the fields based upon conjecture and forgot to turn off the field display
