Canon to announce ‘major’ new firmware for the EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II ahead of CP+

Forgive me for replying when I don’t even have your camera. But have you tried a different button? Sometimes somewhat arbitrarily, some functions are missing off of some buttons. Mine (on R1) is set to the set button.
I´m not sure I tried every button, but at least several. I didn't find it on the "set button", but I'll look again tomorrow since I'm super tired and have to get up at 5.15 (absolutely not my time of day...). Thx for your effort!

And "rate" as well!
I never understood the limited options for reassigning the Rate button on my R5. I have never tried to Rate a photo in any camera but would like to switch from EVF to rear screen underwater as the housing blocks the face sensor. I have setup the Mf-n button to do it but it isn't ergonomic underwater.
It is strange as the R5C's buttons seems to be completely reassignable.

I´d wish for a customizable button to assign AF mode concerning "animal, people and vehicle" AF. I don't like having to go through the menu to change it. On the other hand, I don´t believe the R5 mki would get this firmware upgrade, so never mind :)
What appears weird to me is that on the original R5 you can be in single point AF mode and you are still able to change which kind of subject it should track in a My Menu setting (I have eye AF set to the AF On button).
On the Mark II you have to be in subject tracking mode to change this setting. When you are in single point it is greyed out. On the other hand the Mark II has an „automatic“ setting for this.

This is where I looked. I couldn't find it... mode dial is set to "M".

Please excuse me hijacking the thread
I believe the button you need to look for is the one that looks like a running stick figure with a square loop at the bottom right hand corner. You can limit the options of the subject separately, e.g. I remove the 'vehicle' option, so only cycle through people, animal and none. All the best.

You'll have to scroll down a bit I think. It's a sign of a person with two intertwined arrows beside it. And it's called "change subject to detect" I think.
Not sure if available on every button. I have it set on the illuminate top LCD button.

It lets you toggle through all of your set up subject types on the fly.

I'd like to assign a button to toggle pre-capture on/off. (Please someone tell me it is already possible and I just missed it :D).

On the R1, I'd like to have "Auto" as one of the options for subject to detect. It is available on the R5 II, but not on the R1 .

You can do this already.. I used that star button to the top right of the camera for this. It cycles through auto, people, animals, etc. love it.

Thx for your efforts! I checked every button this and still couldn't find it. But I discovered that my firmware isn't up to date. I've got the 1.8 something version on it. Was this feature added via firmware at some point? I downloaded the current firmware 2.1 from September 2024 and I´ll install it this afternoon. I hope this solves my dilemma.

How about adjustable pre capture like Sony has done so you can choose how long it records before you press the button. Also being able to assign a button to switching it on and off?
I have the Canon BR-E1 Wireless Remote Control and I tried to use with my R6ii for pre capture as I was trying to photograph a kingfisher nest remotely with my camera on a tripod and it wouldn't work but perhaps with new firmware this might be possible on the R1 and R5ii i.e. : with an assignable button to switch pre capture on it might work ?
How about more international sports added to the action priority AF such as rugby, field hockey, waterpolo?
Perhaps action priority AF for bird photography?

Ooooooooh. Nevermind.
Sorry I thought we were talking about the R5II.
Reading back your original comment, makes me feel like a fool now

I just want one touch switch between crop modes.

Give us a menu to enable which ones are enabled to cycle between and pressing your custom button (in my case DoF preview button) will swap between them without bringing up the menu and having to toggle between them.

I only want full and 1.6x. I know Sony does it. Particularly on the r5 series I use it all the time to get extra length from prime lenses when I don’t need 45MP and 17mp is suitable.
