Canon USA Pricing To Increase Due to Tariffs?

I hope Canon doesn't use the tariffs as an excuse to raise prices globally, specifically in Europe.

I've already seen Covid, inflation, increased energy prices due to war, etc. There's always a convenient reason / excuse to increase prices for everything, but rarely do they go back down afterwards.

If Canon sees US customers are willing to pay more, i.e. their sales not falling off a cliff, who knows what they'll do in Europe.

They'll raise the prices appropriately for USA, but for UK, the prices will be cubed.

For some gear, it is already cheaper to fly out of the UK/Europe and buy there than buy at home. And then there's eBay/Amazon.

I've been told the problem is if the warranty is needed and getting the item past customs without paying those fees.

That sounds like FUD to me in order to discourage grey market buying and to discourage people buying from cheaper territories. The only time duties/tariffs are involved is in the event of a sale. Warranty shipments do not qualify.

That sounds like poor reading to me. Those were separate points.

1) VAT on import of a new item purchased overseas.

2) Needing warranty service. The USA warranty is one year, I believe it’s longer in the UK/EU.

Canon pricing has been at or lower than the USA pricing for a while now (besides refurb).

Our government has ruled out retaliatory tariffs as it just increases local prices for imported goods and hurts our inflation. We even run a deficit with the USA for all that helped us.

Trumps government doesn’t like that ours negotiates a medicine subsidy scheme at a country level keeping pricing reasonable. If it isn’t in the scheme then they can charge what they like (and do so).
They also don’t like our bio security laws keeping diseases at bay from our island but the US loves our wagyu and Big Macs will cost more there too!

We will certainly not holiday in the US for a long time to come.

Perhaps wealthy US citizens will get a 24% tax cut so their costs will offset. No promises of that yet

I did a decent part of my photographic life in the USA. There is plenty of world left with no future USA trips - this chapter is closed.

On April 2, the United States Government announced a 24% tariff on Japan. The tariff is scheduled to come into place on April 9, 2025. If and when it does, that will increase the cost of goods imported to the United States from Japan by 24%.

Remember, tariffs are on declared import value and not retail price. This can often be an enourmous difference.

Yes, but it's not in this case, as was addressed earlier in this thread:

Unfortunately, the margins on cameras and lenses are very small. 9 to 12 points. A lot of retailers run on a negative operating margin on Canon camera and lens SKUs. Canon USA may eat a bit of it, but they are running on the same tight margins.
