Show your Bird Portraits

A pair of my favorite shots from the little watering spot in the mountains. I started adding water when I visit after sitting there through a rainstorm and watching birds make use of the standing water even though there is a year round seep about 10' away in the brush. In late November I only have a short window when the three depressions are in the sun.

Two female Western Bluebirds getting a drink. f/9 was able to keep them both in focus.

And a solitary male a bit later.

Great shots. Well done, ERHP.

Earlier I posted what had been my best photo of the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker. I am not sure why, but the AF of the R1 and R5 both struggle to get good lock. For now, I am chalking it up to the camouflage of the YBS being that good, especially around the eye.

While the Northern Flicker continues to be skittish, the YBS is slowly becoming more comfortable. I have seen it at my feeder several times and a couple days ago, even when it saw me, it went back and forth on trees near my feeder rather than flying off deep into the woods.

More light, better contrast, adding the 1.4x TC to the 500 f/4 II and I had these:
R5, EF 500 II, most shots are 1/1600, f/5.6 with ISO floating between 400 and 2500

I had never seen one before around a month ago, so I am pretty pleased to now have this collection.

Driving along this morning I saw a Kestrel swoop down. Stopped the car and grabbed the R5ii +200-800mm.

I read your statement too quickly and thought the Kestrel was the one who stopped your car and absconded with your camera and 200-800. I thought, "That Kestrel's got good taste!" Then I saw the gif and realized my error.
Nice shots by the way.

If there was a comma in instead of a full stop (period) in "I saw a Kestrel swoop down. Stopped the car and grabbed" then your first take would have been correct.
