We saw some great solar storms that lead to seeing better auroras further south that typical. I am seeing some reports that Solar Cycle 25 peaked in October 2024 and others saying it is expected to peak in July 2025. None the less we are in a period of heighted solar activity, I am wondering what other people are doing to try to take advantage of the solar maximum? My experience with auroras is fleeting, but it is a photography goal.

I have thought about a dedicated trip north, but I have been tracking Kp indexes and activity for awhile now and like many natural phenomena it seems that you can put yourself in all the right places and may still come away with nothing.

Right now, I am working on being prepared. If something happens locally like those two events in 2024, I want to have a few locations scouted out and the right lenses in hand. If I can get 3-5 day notice, I am also thinking of a quick trip, but I am wondering where would be the best locations that I could get too easily (I am based in southern New Hampshire). Iceland comes to mind, but I have been there before and am impressed by their cloud cover.

Regarding the lenses, I already own the Rokinon EF 14 f/2.8 and picked up the RF 24 f/1.4 VCM (just arrived at my door). I would need notice to rent, which is why I opted for a dedicated lens.

I am just wondering what others are doing/planning if anything?

In December I was in Tromso county (Norway, Sommaroy), where supposedly the most northern lights can be expected in terms of latitude. Last year I almost only had beautiful days with cloudless skies.
This year I was there for 9 days and the whole time it was stormy and cloudy. When I flew back I saw that 2 days later the cloud cover cleared and wonderful pictures were posted.

Last year I had great pictures with a KP value of 2-3, so this value doesn't necessarily say whether you can take pictures or not.

In December I wanted to film the lights with my R5C and bought and adapted the Sigma 14 mm 1.8 for EF. It produces excellent images on the sensor and is probably one of the widest and brightest lenses for Canon.

I think I will try again for a few days in February this year. I now know the flight and bus connections and the accommodation.
