The Canon EOS R1 & Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z begin shipping this week

I happened to phone B&H earlier today on a separate issue.

My pre-order was placed within 3-4 minutes of launch. I was told today that while they would receive R1s, they would not be shipped until the 18th. It didn't seem accurate, so I didn't pay much attention to it. Then, a short while later I was emailed that I mine would indeed be sent on the 14th.

I heard some stories of folks receiving their R5m2 on launch day — and some of them were for folks who ordered much later. That puzzled me. I've heard of some smaller retailers doing that for trusted customers.

My B&H order shows New Order and that it is Processed.

I expect to receive my copy from B&H on Thursday this week.
Out of curiosity, why do you expect that?

Their product page still shows "Est. Ship Date: Thu Nov 14."

Called B&H to upgrade my R1 order to next day shipping because I leave for two shoots on Sunday night and won't be home when it potentially arrived Monday they told me it would be at my house tomorrow? Could have been a mistake, but I do hope it arrives before my trip. It would be very cool to mess around with on my shoots.
Seems an odd thing for them to say. They told me today they didn't have any firm information.

Mine shows "Order In Progress."
B&H will sometimes ship a day early to make sure you get it launch day. They did that for my R5II, though FedEx delays caused me to receive it a day late.
Out of curiosity, when did you order?

I'm wondering how/when/why they choose to do this, as I ordered immediately and did not have my R5m2 ship until launch day.

Thanks for sharing any insight!

I received the order confirmation email about 50 seconds after the top of the hour.
That's fast!

I checked: I received an email at 4 minutes past the hour stating that the pre-order link was available; I received my order confirmation email within that same minute.

If mine actually ships on the 14th (with overnight delivery), I'll be happy. That's 13 days sooner than the initially-expected ship date (26/Nov).

That said... definitely jealous if you *receive* yours on the 14th! As mentioned earlier, I heard of a few people who ordered well after that first day who received their R5m2 on launch day, . That was a little disappointing. At least if you get yours on launch day — and I hope you do! — you were super on it.

Keep us posted!

No, that’s just the light angle on the box

My work Mac is a 16” M1 Pro in Silver, and I need some way to tell them apart when closed other than staring at the Thunderbolt ports and trying to figure out if they’re Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 ;).

My wife’s M3 Pro MBP is also space black, it's a very nice finish.

(Yikes, posted that from my phone and the screenshot was huge on my Mac, lol.)
do we need a corner for you people?

The longer in depth videos would have to be YouTube. A series of shorter videos on YouTube shorts/instagram reels/ TikTok. I’m building a website with photos taken from each camera. Not really technical reviews like everyone does these days. Just real world comparisons and match ups. Something light and fun. I’m not a YouTuber at all. Just some hobby videos on the side. Hopefully someone finds them either fun or useful. I’m tired of the same old pixel peepers on you tube that test a camera for two days and show you a bunch of charts. I can get that from the corporate website. Lol.

this is great.

I sent you a PM.

I ordered my R1 literally the minute it was announced and have a confirmed order as of 6:01 a.m. on the day of the official announcement.

I also ordered my R5 Mk2 at the same time and it was shipped a day before launch by. FedEx Priority Overnight and it arrive before noon on launch day.

Of course, there can always be delays, but I did my best to secure a R1 on launch day.

You'll be good with B&H, they will be well provided for. I'll update if I get told anything different.

I replace a five year old laptop with a 14" MBP with the nano-texture display. I really like the display; the lack of refection is easier on my eyes.
I considered the nano-texture option, but I don’t have issues with glare currently, and reportedly there’s a (very slight) loss of contrast with it.
Dammit. Now as I'm sitting here, I can't help but notice every little bit of glare on my 2019 MBP. So I guess I'll head over to my local Apple Store today and look at them side by side. I was a bit put off by the requirement to only clean the nano texture display with Apple's $19 cleaning cloth (and I wonder when the 20% larger Pro version for $39 and the 40% larger Max version for $99 will be launched). But if I like the display better, I can deal with the dedicated cleaning cloth. Just in case, I ordered the same Mac with the nano texture display, delivery in 2 weeks if I keep the order and return the unopened glossy version.

Sounds like you are positioned as well as one possibly could to receive one on release day, esp with your history with the R5m2.

Unfortunately, shipping before release day doesn't seem like it is exactly correlated to time of order.

I don't have confidence that mine, ordered 4' after launch (w/ Priority Overnight shipping), will be received release day. I wish that were the case.

Keep us posted what you hear in the next 24-48h with your shipping.

I'm sitting here with an M4 Max MacBook Pro (I've had the M1, M2 and M3 before it). The nano-texture display is fantastic.

If you have a controlled environment, the glossy display will offer more accuracy (when calibrated), deeper blacks, etc. I use this on my Pro XDR display. For a laptop that is used in a variety of lighting conditions — and outdoors! — the nano-texture makes a notable difference at the expense of a bit of contrast. For me, it's a worthwhile tradeoff in a portable device. YMMV.

Thanks, and while I am often sitting at a desk, I also use my personal Mac throughout the house, and we have a lot of natural light. I went to the local Apple Store this morning, had a look at them side by side (on the Pro Display), and while I could see the slight loss of contrast it wasn't much loss at all, and the nano texture seemed to do a very good job at cutting reflections compared to typical matte screens. I had brought the Mac I ordered with me, so I returned it. Since I'd already ordered the nano texture version of the same machine, I just have to wait until it gets here.

As luck would have it, I'm sitting in a place where the sun is pouring through a window such that half my screen is lit. That I'm able to read the text at all and reply is amazing — would be impossible in this light with a non-nano-texture screen.

Would I edit images for publication in my book in this light? No.

Would I edit images on this MacBook in a darker environment? Yes... but I would do the final check on my Pro Display XDR before submitting.

I do all my image processing on a big display anyway, with the Mac closed and connected to a dock (which makes it convenient to trade off between work Mac, personal Mac, and other family members’ Macs). Portable use is typically general use, occasional movie streaming, etc., non-critical stuff.

I sometimes have the need to process images on the spot — e.g., I've had to do this at halftime at a sportsball games for local media. Sometimes I have a dark location, other times I don't. The nano-texture will help.

I still was able to get it done with my M3 Max MBP, and my M2 Max before that, and my M1 Max, etc.

Fully agree about general use, of course. The less common situation of needing to do work with imagery in uncontrolled lighting situations is a welcome bonus.

Wish the ability to have my R1 in hand on release day was a thing for me! :)

I considered the nano-texture option, but I don’t have issues with glare currently, and reportedly there’s a (very slight) loss of contrast with it. Most of my use with it will be in clamshell mode connected to a 5K:2K display, anyway.

It’s not Apple’s first go at this. The PowerBooks, iBooks and early MacBooks had matte displays. In 2008, they started using glossy displays and at the time they stated:

Still, for a couple of model releases just after that they charged $50 more to get matte as a CTO option (configure to order, like the 2 TB SSD option in the box above), then went glossy only. In 2015, they started putting an anti-glare coating on MBPs, but there were issues with it delaminating (including an unannounced repair program that is probably why they went with etching instead of a coating this time around).

Here are a 2004 12” PowerBook G4 (left), a 2010 17” MBP (center/back) and a 2008 13” Unibody MacBook (right) that was the first one to get a glossy screen.

I actually just prepped those three vintage Macs yesterday to have them recycled by Apple. All of them powered on! The 2010 17” MBP was in active use by my son until several months ago when my wife replaced her 2020 Intel MacBook Pro with a 14” M3 Pro MBP and handed the 2020 down to him, so I was able just erase the SSD and reinstall MacOS (no need for the latter, really).

The 2008 MacBook booted fine (testament to Apple’s durability), and I erased the SSD that I had swapped for the original HDD. That was as easy as it ever got on a MacBook, that model has a finger-release latch on the bottom that lets you directly replace the battery, and the HDD with just the two screws holding the bracket.

The 2004 PowerBook actually powered on but booted to a ? folder (no System Folder found), so rather than try to solve that conundrum I just opened it up, removed the HDD wiped it the sure and certain way…a strong magnet followed by a hammer. I was a little sloppy putting it back together, which is why the F11 key is askew (unlike the 2008 Unibody, that job was ~30 screws and going in under the keyboard).

As of Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. EST I see that B&H has posted a payment for the FedEx overnight shipping, but not the charge for the camera. I suspect that by EoD there will also be a charge for the camera. We shall see... Once I have tracking number then I know it is shipped.

As of Wednesday morning at 6:20 a.m. EST, B&H has charged my card for the R1. :)
