The Canon EOS R1 will come well before the EOS R5 Mark II [CR3]

If by a selectable sensor you mean one which offers the choice between several MP values, it already exists. And works fine, witout any issues: Leica M11.
My misunderstanding. I imagined a scenario where the camera would have two physical sensors in a single body and one could switch between them. I agree that Canon could do some pixel binning like the M11 and have a really feature rich cameras in the R1 / R5 Mk2.

Except that 4 has bad connotations in both Japanese and Chinese languages, so it is unlikely they want to call it "4".

In China, four (四 - pronounced sì) has the same pronounciation as death (死), so many avoid that. I've seen highrise buildings without all floor numbers that would have a '4' in it. Same with hotel room numbers.

In Japanese, the characters are the same and they have the same pronunciation: Shi.
I think this is overblown. Nikon didn't care about that with the D4/D40/D400, Fujifilm didn't care with the X-T4/X-E4, and surprise surprise, Canon had the 40D/400D/450D/T4i/etc. I do not think they would let traditional superstition stop them from making a product with a number that made sense for its model.

14 and 74 as well in Chinese.
Tetraphobia is more common across a number of Asian countries than 13 in western cultures. Countries like Singapore with a combination of cultures have even less available numbers :)

Canon have offered a number of new features in lower end models first which is annoying! I'm not sure if Canon is wanting ultimate reliability in the 1D series or doing live testing.
They did let their engineers off the chain with the R5 though.
A very valid point as well. RAW burst, Eye Control AF were all introduced in lower end models. I never use Eye Control AF on the R3 because with eyeglasses it does not work. Would love to see a R3 firmware update that gave it RAW burst. I really like the RAW burst feature on Canon; my understanding is that Nikon pre-release burst is JPG only.

I expect the Canon R1 to be a beast in terms of features regardless of its resolution.

One minor precisation, that does not invalidate your point: Nikon never made a D400... for reasons unknown (don't think it was about the number 4)

If this rumor is true its very disappointing! I have been seriously considering adding a full frame stacked sensor camera to my arsenal and was hoping the R5ii would be available in the relatively near future. I like the R3 but prefer a 45mp camera. The Nikon Z8 is very tempting especially paired with that incredible 600PF lens. I love Canon products and have no intentions of getting rid of my R7-RF100-500 combo but I wish Canon would do a better job keeping up with the competition!

I do not know you heavily invested you are in Canon glass, but if you are makes sense to stick with Canon. With that said some of the lightweight Nikon telephoto lenses are very appealing to me.

Right!
An army of killer-elks was trained by BMW, Lexus, Audi & co. to savagely attack the innocent A Class!
(3rd. generation A Class was far better than its predecessors). But still no real fun to drive...:)
No. no, it was an American black ops operation to train them to support the American high end auto industry.

I can only confirm. During my active years, I got many gifts from Japanese customers. Never 4 pieces, never.
The power of traditions, or should I say superstition?
And yet, the EOS 5 D IV...perhaps it was named differently for the Japanese and Chinese markets?
It's true about superstition, but from my limited experience more Japanese people seem to think of superstitions in a tongue and cheek kind of way. Anyway, Canon's Japanese site:

I also remember our "Intercultural Training" during which we were warned, never to hand out 4 similar business gifts to Japanese or Chinese collegues and customers. :)
No superstition here, only basic politeness...
I will ask to confirm, but I think it can be interpreted as saying, "death" or, maybe even "die."

Just a few tidbits of information. I went to my local camera shop and they mentioned that on February 14, 2023 that they expect Canon to release four new lenses and make some type of R1 announcement. They thought the R1 would be a development announcement and not a full product announcement. They also mentioned that the R1 would be Canon professional sports and photo journalism camera, which makes me believe it will NOT be a high MP camera.
