Well, even those "snapshots" taken during the monaco race are photographs, so they all have a copyright holder who has to give the permission to share them.And if permission is needed to release information, this entity would seem to be little more than an extension of Canon's marketing arm.
If they don't want the released yet (maybe to protect their source or the person who has been given the camera) then it would be a copyright infringment and it would also make it very unlikely to get an more confident information in the future.
One recent example: I don't know if it was someone from here or from the DSLR forum but apperently some stupid guy hoped he could sell the R1-backside-images he just stole from Camerawerk to Jared Polin before they circulate everywhere. Luckily he declined (and shared the quite funny chat on social media).
