The PowerShot V Series Will Become Canon's New Line of Compact Cameras

We’ll see how the compact camera market goes over the next year or two. I get why people on this forum are excited about this camera (though personally, I will stick with the M series), but I suspect the reasons driving excitement here differ from the reasons behind the resurgence in popularity of compact cameras.

That resurgence seems mostly driven by Gen Z using old models of P&S cameras, and the knock-on effect of them buying new ones since used old ones are hard to come by.

One of the main reasons they are buying compact cameras is due to the built-in flash that is much better than their smartphone. That is something the camera companies don’t understand yet. It doesn’t look like this V1 will have a built in flash either.

The EOS M6II flash is quite neat, you can easily bend it backward to have a bit of bounce. But it is very much limited by the lens used, it's hard to avoid shadows with close up shots, unless you use the 22mm.

Yeah...I use a 270EX II to get around that issue. It's a nice little flash, replaced by the EL-100 but I prefer the form factor of the 270.

Same here, the 270EX II is a joy to use, but the EL-100 beats it in power and features. I hope Canon releases multi-fangled shoe version of the 270EX and EL-100, including an EL-5 style modelling light. The modelling light is very handy when trying to focus for macro or in the dark and in a pinch, for video.

I disagree (not about the 'joy to use'). The EL-100 has a guide number of 26m at 50mm, the 270EX II has a GN of 27m at 50mm so not really different but technically the 270EX II is more powerful. The EL-100 does offer rotation and more flexibility on bounce angle, but the 270EX II supports HSS and the EL-100 does not.

Am I the only one who is begging for a GX1 III Aps-c replacement?
I love that camera, I just bought one, but the video capabilities are quite outdated at this point.
Aps-c sensor, zoom, evf, nd, optical stabilizer and you can still put in your pocket, I love the G1X III

Now we're cooking!

All I want from this line is good autofocus. The G7X III is great for photos but the RX100 VII blows it out of the water in video and autofocus. I use the RX100 VII as my compact camera and the EVF, flash and zoom make it great for almost everything, but I can't stand the menus.
My dream Canon compact would be a direct competitor to the RX100 VII. Been thinking about pulling the trigger on buying that Sony, but the price and the UI don't do it for me. Plus, I'm assuming as soon as I buy a 2019-released camera Sony will release the RX100 VIII.

I know that V means vlog, but 16-50 doesn\'t offer enough segmentation from phones for me. Especially for an all-in-one travel and documentary camera. I\'d prefer the old 24-105 from the G series, just with a nicer digital zoom. I\'d have kept my mouth shut for 85 because digital zoom could maybe tap out at 100 — but 50 is basically no tele at all.

Hopefully there\'s never a fence or railing anywhere blocking me getting closer. This is also why I haven\'t picked up the Sony ZV1-II for the wife and held out for a Canon.

Do they have a replacement lined up for the SX70? I've seen lots of birders use the SX70 or the Nikon equivalent who don't want a DSLR/MILC so it would be a shame to see that option go. An SX80 with a DPAF sensor and less MP would be great, my old SX40 with 12MP is sharper then my newer 20MP SX710.

What do you mean? I have the EL-100 and it shows "High-speed synchronization" as a menu option. I've never used it, but is it different from the 270EX II?

As for the V1, I don't think I'd go for it unless it was at least APS-C. If I'm bringing a camera anyways I'd just take the R5 and a small pancake.

I’ve never understood the high regard (generally) for the RX100 on CR, and yet the total disdain for the G1Xiii.
I’d say that out of all my cameras the G1Xiii is probably my favourite. The modern aps sized sensor means that I can put it on a tripod out in the field at 100 iso and equal my 5Ds with a zoom lens, up to the G1X’s 6000 pix output size and 24-72 (equiv) lens of course. I’ve never found a 1” sensor camera to really match a FF head to head, unlike an aps sized sensor.
I presume this lack of love is to do with the camera “only” having a 3x zoom and relatively slow at the long end, yet in practice the difference in field of view between 24 and 72 is enormous and 5.6 at 45mm is quite useable in most situations.
For anyone looking for a genuinely (coat) pocketable compact I really can recommend the G1Xiii.
