The PowerShot V Series Will Become Canon's New Line of Compact Cameras

Whew, your wishlist definitely has a lot specs that won´t apply to price point and probably not to the targeted market. I don´t think that people who currently buy compact cameras really need...

...internal 3-stop ND
...c-log
...weather sealing
...detachable EVF
...LP-E17 battery

I´d expect it to have just the features one needs to take a picture and make some videos.
Maybe those specs are a little of a stretch, but the G1Xiii, has weather sealing and an optical 2 stop ND filter.
It also has some other pretty advanced features such as a spot meter that can be linked to AF point (it’s not just you 1 series guys who can have this, but then the G1X is a 1 series ;-), ) but also the spot is quite small. If you zoom to 45mm it’s about 1.5 degrees, allowing proper use of a spot to pin highlights and lowlights, which is something most (all ?) other cameras can’t do.
However all this isn’t at the rumoured V1 price point of course.

What? Spot meter linked to AF?
I'm doomed, my R5 II doesn't even have it!

Hello all,

I've been lurking for 10-20 years or so and finally decided to sign up to CR so that I can contribute.

I'm really disappointed that there will not be a G7X Mk IV. My Mk III is my go to travel camera - it's smaller than my iPhone and has way better IQ.

I don't use its video capability at all. I really like the fast 24-100mm equivalent zoom - the vlogger cameras go wide, but not long.

The fact that used ones are selling for more than new is a testament to the desirability of this camera.

Maybe there will be a PowerShot V "surprise" in the future...

I am interpreting that spec data a little differently. 1.4x crop for stills and a slight crop for video, suggests an APS-H sensor that is not quite fully covered by the lens (something similar was done on the G1x Mark II, so not out of the question). The 16-50mm equivalent is not an easy range, but it does make sense for the vlogging world (this is a "V" camera) and Canon has gotten very clever with WA lenses lately with the RF 16mm and 28mm as examples. Canon still makes APS-H sensors for industry, so the tooling is in place and that would make the camera unique, and also a bit nostalgic given its "1" designation.

G7X Mk III: 6 (!) months at least to obtain one in Europe...

Why not the internal ND? It’s already on the G7X III and G1 X III. Weather sealing is present on the G1 X III as well. C-log is just a firmware thing that probably doesn’t require that much extra computational power.

Detachable EVF and LP-E17 is probably too much though. It is a 1-series by name, so hopefully canon gives it as much as possible to compete against the x100vi and upcoming Ricoh GRIV, which will just have larger sensors to start with. The last G1X III came out almost ten years ago, hopefully the processor has become much more energy efficient, maybe they can squeeze 80 min of 4K video out of the old NB-10L

I’m ready to pay x-100VI prices for something like this at least

G15 and G1X Mk II sensors with infrared/low-pass/anti-alias filter attached.

These are from tear-downs on my personal units. My experience is that PowerShots are good for “only” 30-40,000 cycles. Eventually something mechanical happens, such as a sticky Image Stabilizer or looseness in the collapsible lens non-linear travel tracks.

I’ll see if I can upload a PDF document with thumbnails of my tear-down process.

PowerShot G15 tear-down sequence.

These were taken on my 1DX Mk II with EF 100mm f/2.8 L macro lens. ISO 100, exposures between 4 and 10 seconds, f/16, existing light in my spare bedroom/office.

I used Digital Photo Professional > File > Print Contact Sheets to make the thumbnails. I have a paid subscription for Adobe Acrobat and it acts as a printer driver. I selected “High Quality” option – there is good detail in the small thumbnails if you peek.

The people buying digicams don't need hardcore specs, they are unlikely to know what an ND filter even is. If Canon wanted to ride the trend their priorities would be:

- low/competitive price
- availability
- small size
- built-in flash
- wifi file transfer
- cool looking and available in different colours
- flip-up screen

Oh? Are you speaking from personal experience using one, or did I miss the announcement?

Or do you mean the V10? If so, I’m not sure that should be used as a comparator since the current rumor is that the V1 is a completely different sort of camera.
Completely different, but clearly, still video centric with the "V" in the name. The rumor and the designation suggest a move up market. Maybe substantially so.
