The PowerShot V Series Will Become Canon's New Line of Compact Cameras

If it's intended primarily as a video camera, why not 1.4" 16:9?
Video is consumed in many formats and not necessarily cinema (16:9). The vertical crop for mobile device consumption is the best example and phones are easily rotated from landscape to portrait to maximise the pixels being used to generate the video.

seems strange as most folks seem to frame their phone images with a 16x9 ish "view finder" i would have thought they would use 16x9 sensors.
On the iPhone, there's a setting that lets you 'view outside the frame':

ViewOutsideFrame.png

With the setting enabled, you can see the 4:3 area that will be the actual captured image and what's 'outside that frame' fills the wider aspect ratio of the screen, dimmed and with the camera controls overlaid.

It's using a wider camera to capture what's outside the frame, i.e. if you select the telephoto camera (3x) then it uses the main (1x) camera for what's outside the frame, if you select the main (1x) camera then it uses the ultrawide (0.5x) camera for what's outside the frame, and if you select the ultrawide (0.5x) camera then it can't show what's outside the frame.

If you turn the setting off, you just see what the cameras will capture (the 4:3 area).

I'm more interested in the lens, will it really be that short of a focal length (16-50mm)?
Given we have the same sensor size in the G1X Mark II with a longer focal length (24-120mm equiv.), this seems like a step backwards.
A pocket sized m43 kind with 16-50mm ff eq lens sounds like a winner to me.
I just hope they give it some proper aperture like F1.8 or F2.8 all the way - and not like the sony zv-1 II (18-50mm equivalent F1.8-4)

With a proper AF system and perhaps a good amount of MP, you could still crop as well.

V1 will not be 1, not even V3. It should be 10 or 100. I’m disappointed. Other manufacturers make compact models with APS-C sensor and some with even OVF. V1 would not be a choice for professionals. I would be interested a good prosumer compact.

Today number one should have
- EVF (or OVF)
- APS-C (or FF)
- 4K video
- 120 fps
- 16:9 video
- same battery as professional cameras
- same colour science as professional models

Or is this model for consumer market and professional/prosumer model comes separately.

I disagree. Ultrawide is more important than having a modest tele on a carry camera. I do not like when I have to use my phone for ultra wide. If I need tele then I will take my primary camera.

I disagree. Ultra wide is not important to me on a carry camera, whereas I find modest tele very useful. When I’ve only got my compact with me it is my primary camera.
