Nikon Officially Announces the Z5II

And it was almost too late for Canon to catch up, so they basically had to repurpose the 5DIV as a mirrorless. If they didn't have their name to rely on, that story could've ended very differently.
Yes, just like Canon was late with the EOS M. Then that line became the global best-selling MILC line, at one point 17% of all cameras sold were EOS M. Then they were late to FF MILC, and now they lead that as well. Justified criticism is fine. Rewriting history, not so much.

Canon USA Pricing To Increase Due to Tariffs?

for businesses, it is a bit different, and the end result is that you'll see wedding photographers that are new to the game (or that upgrade) will need to increase their prices ever so slightly to take into account the increase of their supply costs. this will contribute to what consumers thnk of as inflationary price increases.
What is eBay doing, I wonder? Do tarriffs target used goods or just new?
These are broad/country-based tariffs affecting everything that is physically imported through US customs albeit with the current USD800 threshold. Tariffs can be levied based on on HTS codes for the type of product whether new or used as far as I know https://hts.usitc.gov/
Local pricing for used items that were sourced before the tariffs should rise if the seller understands the current new market pricing.

At least there are a couple a laughs or at least myriad of memes for Heard&McDonald Island's penguins being tariffed 10% but the islands are uninhabited... or that Norfolk Island is tariffed at 29% even though they are both part of Australia.
Diego Garcia is another weird one with it being part of the UK but it is totally inhabited by ~4000 US soldiers ie he is tariffing the US!
The calculation he used to determine how much other countries tariffed against the US is laughable.

Nikon Officially Announces the Z5II

You're right!
Canon seem sooo desperate right now, they are struggling to survive. The R8 doesn't stand a chance against the Z5.
Sad, sooo sad...
PS: Keep on dreaming. :p
No need to be ironic. We all know if Canon didn't have the name Canon, they'd be nowhere as popular. Imagine if Fujifilm made the choice to close their mount, they might as well close their business.
This Z5II is even an option for wedding photographers, whereas the R8 isn't because of Canon's cripple hammer - one card slot and limited to 1/4000 shutter. Sorry but hard facts. This camera will sell well. And new customers will listen to the influencers telling them that Canon has fewer lens options.

Mirrorless didn't surpass DSLR market share until Canon fully committed to MILCs. Canon steadily gained on then surpassed Sony even with their 'limited' RF lens selection. In part, that's because with a simple adapter their lens selection is not limited at all. Now, Canon's lens selection continues to increase and they've started allowing Sigma lenses for APS-C (which still represents ~75% of the mirrorless market).

I get that you're addicted to the Sony KoolAid, but try to come up for a breath of reality once in a while.
Sorry for bursting your bubble, but I own 3 Canon cameras so probably pretty far from being addicted to any Sony KoolAid. And I much rather would buy a Nikon before I buy a Sony. I feel a lot of projection from somebody who's so addicted to the Canon KoolAid that he's unable to read and reflect on any justified criticism.
While it's true, Canon made most of their sales with cheapo DSLRs like the Rebel T7 or Rebel SL3, Sony held No1 in Mirrorless cameras for a long time (still does in Japan AFAIK). And it was almost too late for Canon to catch up, so they basically had to repurpose the 5DIV as a mirrorless. If they didn't have their name to rely on, that story could've ended very differently.

Canon: No Plans for High Resolution R1

Japanese site Mynavi has an interview with the R1 development team. One of the topics is: “What are the criteria for a Canon flagship camera?” and it has an explanation about the name R1 (and the hyphen ;) ).

Google translated link.
Oh, why couldn't this have been available a month or so ago!

A short translated extract:

"

What are the criteria for a Canon flagship camera?

...

When the EOS R3 was announced, it was clearly stated that "Canon's standards do not warrant the name '1'." So what was the decisive factor that made the EOS R1 meet the standards, but not the EOS R3? The 1 series is often said to be "highly reliable," but that alone lacks specificity. There is a possibility that people will misunderstand, "Is the EOS R3 prone to breakage?" or "Is the EOS R3 vulnerable to rain?" In my experience using the EOS R3 for three years, this has not been the case. Regarding water resistance, I have heard that the EOS R3 had "water resistance to the '1' standard." If there is still a difference with the EOS R1, please tell me specifically what that difference is.

Nonomura : I think there are three major evolutions from the EOS R3 to the EOS R1.

The first is the overwhelming evolution of the AF, which I mentioned earlier. The remaining weak spots in the EOS R3 have been completely overcome, achieving AF performance worthy of a flagship model.

The second is that it is equipped with the best viewfinder in EOS history. It is the largest, brightest, and easiest to see viewfinder to date. In terms of specs, it has 9.44 million dots, a magnification of about 0.9x, and is about three times brighter than the EOS R3.

Thirdly, the readout speed of the CMOS sensor has been improved, enabling delay-free, blackout-free shooting and a significant reduction in rolling shutter distortion. I'm sure there are some people who are hesitant to switch from the EOS-1D X Mark III to a mirrorless camera because they are particular about the ease of viewing through the optical viewfinder, but I feel that the camera now has performance that I can proudly recommend.

Mr. Arakawa: Actually, we couldn't say that the R3 surpassed the EOS-1D X Mark III in terms of shutter speed or viewfinder. That's why we couldn't use the "1" in the name.

Why was the model name "EOS R1"?

- I'd also like to ask about the naming. Why did you choose the name "EOS R1"?

Nonomura : Originally, the EOS-1 series of SLR cameras had a hyphen between "EOS" and the "1". This was to prevent the number "1" from being mistaken for the lowercase letter "L" or the capital letter "I". However, since the EOS R series has the letter "R" after "EOS", we decided that the "1" would be correctly recognized even without the hyphen. As a result, we decided on the name "EOS R1" to be consistent with other models in the EOS R series.

--I expected it to be the "EOS-1R." The EOS-1 is a name that has been passed down for many years, and it was a name that was carried over even when it changed from film to digital, so I thought that would not change.

Nonomura-san: To add a little more detail, the first camera to use the "hyphen" + "1" name was the "F-1" released in 1971. The F-1 was the first professional model camera, so EOS cameras followed suit and were named "EOS-1". That trend continued all the way up to the EOS-1D X Mark III.

Nikon Officially Announces the Z5II

This is some aggressive pricing and will definitely eat into EOS R8 sales, and maybe even a chunk of EOS R6II sales.
It offers a lot that R6II does, but for ~$500 less. With Sony's release of the A7V approaching, which is probably gonna be a 40MP camera, Canon may not be doomed, but they're gonna be under quite some strategic pressure at Christmas.
Also, with their self-created problem that people are getting fed up about no third-party lens alternatives (for full frame).
They've been sleeping for years in the mirrorless market. Then they woke up and managed to surpass Sony. Just to knock themselves in the foot with limiting their lens selection.
You're right!

BIRD IN FLIGHT ONLY -- share your BIF photos here

Today is my first day back from my most recent work trip where I tacked on a vacation to Sicily. I made it a goal to photograph flamingos, something I have never seen outside of a zoo. I found out there was a breeding colony just north of Siricusa in Priolo Salt Pans Nature Reserve. We were there for only about 90 minutes as this was added on to the day we toured Siracusa and rains were coming. We only hit one blind, but there are several.

I have many more to process, but let's just say, I'd happily go back and spend more time.

One of the first pics I looked at today:

Cats!

We recently adopted a pair of 4 month old kittens. Lots of fun! Both of them are very polydactyl.

Sigma to announce a 200mm f/1.8 Sports Lens?

The video mentioned "high end portraiture." Twenty or thirty years ago, when Sports Illustrated did TV programs documenting the making of the swimsuit issue, the Canon version of this was the lens that was used. Earlier shows used the 300 f/2.8, handheld. Tiny, tiny depth of field. I still maintain that my 135 f/2 is a much, much better value. (Sigma doesn't make a 135 f/1.8, do they?)
I see no reason replacing my EF 135 f/2. A wonderful lens!
The new RF may be sharper, but frankly, I don't care at all! :)

They have done the 135 f1.8 Art for DSLR, I had it until last year, it's a wonderful lens, sharp as tack; it succeeded to my EF 135 f2 L which was already amazing, but this one was even better, see for yourself a test on a 42mpx sensor:

I sold it only because I moved to an even more fantastic lens, their 105 f1.4 Art, I was looking for an used copy for so many years, and last year I was lucky enough to secure a (relatively) cheap copy, a barely used demo unit.

The next time someone has an interview with Canon, they should ask if the designer responsible for RF rear lens caps going on only one way and the management line that approved the decision were simply fired, or were tarred and feathered and then fired.
