The Canon EOS R5 Mark II will not function with third-party batteries

I just checked my Pre orders status and the 3 LP6-EP batteries that were BACK ORDER (25 July) are now NEW ORDER. I think the EPs are now arriving at the merchants. Delivery date is Aug 20 still. The Spare KE eye cup is still on back order.

My camera and extra battery shipped out earlier today. The battery I only ordered last week (camera I did order about an hour after preorders opened). YMMV based on retailer, but my gut feeling says most of us will get what we need in a reasonable time.

Don’t know what’s happening with Canon… lacklustre product launches and now actively restricting products to their batteries. Have used 3rd party batteries in my R since day one. For the price can get half a dozen for the price of one Canon one. Found they last just as long as OEM ones for fraction of the price. Turning cameras in to mobile phones is not the way forward it’s going backwards and makes them less useable.

My guess would be whatever mechanism Canon implemented to make these cameras not work with the original LP-E6 batteries ended up getting 3rd party batteries caught in the crossfire. We'll probably eventually get 3rd party batteries that do work

I purchased four Canon LP-E6P batteries the day of the announcement and have seen that the order is being processed at B&H. Planned ahead and I do not use third party batteries.

Batteries have always been in short supply. For a while there all I would see for the batteries I needed from Canon's website was Out of Stock. I signed up to be notified when the batteries were in stock and I never got an email.

I've been using Sterlingtek batteries and have had great success. They hold a charge longer than OEM Canon batteries.

The idea that Canon supplies only one battery per camera is a joke. Canon should include two batteries for each camera they sell along with a charger. When they sell a vertical battery grip they should also include two batteries as well.

Honestly I think its a bad deal for customers to one day not be able to use a camera because it uses a Canon battery with a chip and that battery is Out of Stock and has been discontinued. Now you have a $4500 paperweight.

I miss the day when cameras used a single button battery that was available at EVERY corner drug store everywhere.

I also heard that Canon has at least one flash that won't use AA batteries. It too must use an OEM Canon battery.

I use two digital cameras an EOS 5D MkII and an R. I don't and won't shoot video with them because I have a dedicated Canon HF G40 camcorder and If I feel the need to shoot more professional video I can upgrade to the XA or Cine line of video cameras some of which are compatible with EF lenses.

I do not miss the days at all when I had to buy a 15-20 $ / € 6 volt battery for my AE 1 every three months because it had decharged while lying in the shop for x months.

I can confirm that LP-E6 third-party batteries do not work in the R5 Mark II. I tried two sets of third-party R5 batteries in my R5 Mark II w/BG-R20 battery grip. One set from Bonacell LP-E6 doesn't even turn on the camera. The display stays blank. The other set from Neewer will make the camera come on, but after clearing the warning about older batteries, I get an Err80, which complains about a problem with the batteries.

Remember that these are LP-E6 equivalents, not the LP-E6NH, designed for the R5. The Original Canon LP-E6NH works in the R5 Mk II, except you get the warning about loss of function. I don't have any third-party batteries marked as compatible with the LP-E6NH, so I can't verify that the exact replacement for the R5 batteries will work or not in the Mk 2 camera.

Yep. I also tried the Neewer and get the same result. I tried the SmallRig with USB-C charging ones and they also generate Err80 after the reduced functionality warning screen . I really love the SmallRig batteries. Hopefully they will come out with new versions designed for the LP-E6P cameras in the near future.

The 8.1 volts must happen in the camera there's nothing in between.

For lithium batteries the manufacturer can rate them anywhere between 3.6V and 4.2V without it making any practical difference.

As @Canon Rumors Guy said, this is why some powertools have 18V batteries and others have 20V ones, using the exact same number of the exact same LG 18650 cells, charged to the exact same voltage. It’s all marketing

My camera has not arrived yet so I have not been able to try this; but has anyone tried the new batteries in 3rd party chargers e.g. the neewer? I presume this should "just work" if the only difference in the batteries is their higher current output and charging them should just be the same.

For a lithium cell, ‘nominal voltage’ is generally 3.5-3.6v, but actual peak voltage is around 4.1-4.2v. So this is a battery with 2 cells which would likely peak at 8.2-8.4v

I don't think DPS wrote any false info or even suggested "Canon is...actively blocking third party batteries." I don't see that he/she edited the post either.

DPS uses third-party batteries, but they are specialized and aren't manufactured forever either, and the third-parties face challenges when new cameras come out and firmware is updated.

I do agree that battery specialization is an unavoidable PITA! The G12 my wife bought in 2011 relies now on aftermarket batteries, and at this point, good ones, even from reputable retailers, are difficult to get. Several times we've received "new" ones that wouldn't take a charge. That means that, yes, at some point, the handy little point and shoot will be a paperweight, even if otherwise it's functioning perfectly.

Same with my Patona Platinums, which were marketed as LP-E6NH replacements/clones. You could even register them in camera, although apparently you couldn’t charge them in-body, which I never did.

It is curious to see that those replacement batteries worked perfectly fine and on par if not better than the real ones in my R5 but won’t power my Mark II at all.

By the way: My original LP-E6NH can’t be registered in camera on my R5 Mark II (I could on my R5) and do not show battery percentage. Is this normal behavior?

I can’t say if it’s normal, but I can’t register LP-E6NH batteries in my R5II either.
