Canon EOS R5 Mark II Firmware Rumors & Speculation

Fixing important bugs like the autofocus freezing, which I also experienced many times, is top priority and actually I am disappointed that after such long time there is still no fix or at least an acknowledgment by Canon indicating that they work on it.

Other than the already mentioned 4K60P Fine which in my view should technically well be possible, I wish for a multi-shot high resolution mode, preferably with some level of motion correction, e.g. select 1 shot as reference to remove motion in other shots (or automatically based on evaluation of differences between all shots) - that's much better than the multi-shot high resolution mode without motion correction as on the original R5.

Note that the already provided 'In-camera upscaling' of JPG or HEIF files (not Raw) is simply a gimmick, as it obviously cannot add any real detail and can easily be done later on the PC.

Requesting updates to firmware in this forum is probably more than whispering in a zephyr but definitely less than screaming in a cyclone.
The best place to provide Canon feedback (if you are not invited to a formal Canon event) is to Canon's support page
eg https://www.canon.com.au/support/support-request-form
or
click "Feedback" at the top of the Canon USA page and you get

DJI dominates the Gimbal space, so they are the safest bet.
The RS 4 Pro is their latest and greatest.
Thanks so much for the information! I had no idea DJI even had gimbals until I started looking into it a bit.

I'll probably get the RS 4 Pro, unless there's a new one coming soon. I'll probably check YouTube or something for rumors.

Do you have any recommendations for a external monitor that is really good? I assume it's probably better to get one of those attached to the camera, then using the R5ii's screen. Plus I don't have the best eyes, so bigger is better! I think they're usually 5-7in monitors.

Thanks again! ☺️

I had issues with 1.0.3 as well, mainly with RF 600F4.
Once I downgraded back to 1.0.2 it was all good, high hit rate of photos in focus and snappy AF was back. I'll stay here maybe for a while. The camera has all the options I want anyway. I have zero issues now

I wish Canon would stop crippling it's still image mode in its hybrid camerad and unblock frame grabbing with Custum Picture enabled. And allow shooting stills with the higher dynamic range SLog3. They bend over backwards by continuing to protect their proprietary picture profiles. Blocking users from applying in camera LUTs to their still images like Panasonic, RED, and Sony allow. Frustrating that Canon continues this philosophy.

Currently Canon blocks in camera 4k Frame grab with Custom Picture set to ON. Continued philosophy of protecting its proprietary \"Picture Styles\" and blocking any attempt to generate a still image in camera with a Look File or LUT applied. Preventing the cameras from being true hybrids. Custom Picture can not be enabled when the user attempts to 4k frame grab in camera.

\"Opengate Recording
Opengate means using the full sensor — great for video shooters. It’s not confirmed yet, but it’s possible\"

This is definitely not gonna happen. It\'d be amazing, but it won\'t because it is a physical sensor design to let that happen.

I use a Ninja V so I can record ProRes, but for just a monitor, then look into PortKeys.

We need 4k 60 fine for the r5ii or a lot of people are leaving Canon it\'s unacceptable!!!
Could someone explain to me for what and where would I see it. Are people shooting movies that no-one ever sees or what. Footage for Youtube, Instagram or Tiktok is often medium to low quality and it makes no difference. Maybe its my eye sight. I can barely tell the difference between HD and 4K. I can understand photographers wanting better autofocus but I can't the better video quality requirements - where do I find this super footage that requires higher video quality ?

Most streaming services offer 4K content. Personally, I shoot video in 4K but downsample it to 1080p for sharing online.

Whether it actually matters depends on the size of your display, how close you are to it, and your visual acuity. This assumes ‘normal’ aka 20/20 vision:

One of our TVs is big enough with seating close enough to be in the ‘blue zone’, and that TV is 4K. Our other two are both smaller and further from seating, and those are 2K.

Thanks for the recommendation! I added both to my cart. I was looking at the "NEEWER F700 7"" but it's only 1080p, so not sure if that matters. I like that it's 2000+ nits.

I figured out today that I have A LOT LOT LOT to learn about video. I'm completely clueless. I bought DaVinci Resolve 20 Studio today and I just recorded a few quick test clips and had a hard time finding them and even getting them into the software. For some reason my video was recording to the SD card and not my 2TB CF express. I'm sure it's just a setting. I finally got it on the CF card and in the software but I'm going to have to watch some tutorials. It's really frustrating but it'll be fun once I learn this stuff!

So I'm planning on getting the DJI that you recommended and I'll probably get the Ninja, it's looks good. I may get a cage or something too. Before any of that stuff, I'm going to learn how to actually take videos. Haha.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

The setting is where you control dual card shooting, dont know what it's called right now. You are on the R5 Mark ii, right? I would recommended to go into custom picture profile and enable C2(Clog 2), also in the codec options go for either HEVC 4:2:2 10bit or XFAVC 4:2:2 10 bit.
For learning davinci i recommended darren mostyn. He has a great tutorial about a node tree, that you can actually use, and it taught me a lot about davinci. Also be sure to learn about color spaces.

Davinci Studio has this very cool node called the "Film Look Creator", which makes grading extremly easy, sort of like dehancer.

Good Luck!

[...] I can barely tell the difference between HD and 4K. [...]
There's a huge gulf even between "HD" and "HD" depending on the source material and medium used. Some of my 1080P Blu-ray discs have superior image quality compared to the '4K' version of the same thing on streaming platforms (Netflix/Disney/HBO), not to mention compared to '1080' streams. In the graph posted by @neuroanatomist, I'm only slightly inside the blue section, but since we mostly watch streaming, the resolution aspect of the TV is pretty much irrelevant.

So, like you, I can barely tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on streaming platforms. But I can tell the difference between non-1080p and 1080p, we shout "megapixels" at the TV when it drops down to 360p :)

Thank you so much for the great information! Exactly what I was looking for! I do have the R5Mii and I still have so much to learn about it. It's so different than my 5DMiii but in great ways. My old camera, I felt like I just had to play with a few settings, mainly the super basic ones. The new one feels like it has a million settings. I got the new one on pre-order but have had little time with it, which I'm trying to change.

I only used video options with the old one maybe 1-2 times but I want to change that with the new one because it seems so much better for video. Don't get me wrong, the old 5D's could create excellent videos. In fact, I remember looking up the main stream movies the 5Dii and iii made at the time or had a part in making and there was quite a few! I assume the newer models did the same.

My heart is definitely for nature photography and macro but I think if I can create videos of them too, it would be even better. There's other things I like to learn such as portraiture and realty, among other things. I work at a place with a showroom and they want me to take photos of it and probably a couple videos. I really like how flambient photography looks, so I'm going to practice that style at home and then probably do it for the showroom.

Sorry for rambling; I'm just excited for learning new things and I really appreciate your help and the help from other fellas! I know there's a lot of people here that are either professionals or enthusiasts that know a lot more than me about certain things!
