Canon EOS R5 Mark II user feedback and discussion

I remembered seeing something similar to your description of the 'freeze'. It was in the R6MII firmware 1.4.0 'problems fixed' list, The firmware and that description is on this site. You want to look at it and see if that's what you experienced.
My issue with the freezes on the r6m2 was due to SD card. It was one sd card that caused that issue.

I tested it with my v1pro and works fine in every mode not sure which trigger I have (got it 3 years ago, then it was the most recent model) but it also worked with ad600pro in every mode. I even managed to use it with electronic shutter in hispeed sync.
Hope that helped

Additional thing today the R5 froze actually not froze but the screen when it exited the standby mode showed black frame. Everything worked but the image on the live view and when I pressed record was totally black. And the recorded file was not actually recorded.
Hope that they will resolve that one but the similar bug really didn’t help on the R6mk2 where the camera acted similar in photo mode.
«I even managed to use it with electronic shutter in hispeed sync.»

I asked this question earlier if it was possible, no one answered. It works like the mechanical in this regard? I’m so happy I might cry a little if it works in HSS med ES. Thanks for sharing, I also use an AD400pro and V1 so love this.

I bought the mark ii yesterday and went birding. Took it back this morning. Just didn’t have the stomach for the purchase I suppose. The camera was dope but I didn’t see a huge difference from my original r5. I didn’t have a ton of time with it tho to be honest .

You know thats fair. It is quite the purchase. If I had an r5, I could have felt the same.

Well the test was a quick one. Didn’t have subject or anything just a room and the flash pointed at a window. At 1/8000 the flash exposed the whole frame. Can try it again and try to get something in the frame that I could freeze to see how it will work with that.
Today I was just testing if it works with the trigger and the light in normal modes.

Sounds like it works, I imagine part of the frame would go black or very bad banding if it didn’t work, or the camera wouldn’t allow it like the R5 when using ES. This is superb!

Actually, the R5ii is cheaper in Australia cf the US at the moment!
USD4300 B&H
exchange rate of 0.67AUD = 1USD
AUD6420
AUD7060 including 10% GST
=> Canon Australia is AUD6700 and includes the 5 year warranty (and custom strap)! It also seems to align with the JPY pricing.
https://www.canon.com.au/cameras/eos-r5-mark-ii

Other retailers have pricing at AUD6440, AUD6470, AUD6500, etc including tax so even better. Must be plenty of stock of the bodies around or maybe they are breaking up the lens combo boxes.

CORRECTED MY EARLIER ERROR:

I was setting up the camera last night and this morning and I noticed a couple of particular observations:

1) If Pre-capture is enabled one cannot select high-speed display
2) If Blackout free display is enabled one cannot select Display Simulation
2) If Blackout free display is enabled the Display Simulation is locked on Exposure only and you cannot get DOF preview (which is fine with me).

I will be enabling Pre-Capture and Black out free EVF for my shooting needs.

Also I have set the camera to shoot at a maximum of 20 fps as default, which is generally more than enough so I obtain reasonable buffer performance. I am using a single Prograde Cobalt 1.3 TB card in the camera.

No way… so two of the reasons I’m buying can’t be used? Jeez that is a major, major bummer….

As best as I can tell this morning. Not a major issue for me. Having pre-capture RAW at 20 fps with a decent buffer with 45 MP will be great for small birds flying off of branches. I really like the fact that Canon allows for a small RGB histogram in the viewfinder to assist in exposure metering. To my knowledge neither Nikkon or Sony allows for that feature. My point is that there is no perfect camera and one learns to adapt to the camera.

The R5 Mk2 is going to be a great camera in a small form factor, but it will not replace the forthcoming R1 in my setup.

I’ve always had exp.sim on and still have the RGB histogram in the EVF and would love blackout free shooting, so this sucks…

What happens to AF when the EVF blacks out? Does it still receive light without interruption? If so, then why aren’t the R5 also blackout free?

And what is «fast display» on the R5 II? 120fps? If so I can live with 60 like I do now, but if it’s any lower that might cause problems.

I CAN adapt, just don’t know why this is an upgrade and a great new function to have if it’s so limited…

From my observations, enabling blackout free shooting locks the EVF to ‘Exposure Simulation’, it doesn’t force it off.

Turning the EC dial darkened the EVF during this mornings outing, so I believe it is still using exposure sim.

There is no mirror like a DSLR so I don't think that EVF blackout will affect AF function at all. The fast readout speed on the R5 is 120 fps and the normal rate is 60 fps.

Thank you for correcting my earlier post. I should not be posting with six hours of jet lag and four hours of sleep.

So I've had my very first paid outing with the R5 Mark II today, here are my take aways:

  • it feels a lot more robust and refined software-wise
  • AF in dark scenes is a lotsurer on where to go
    • I shot in a laboratory of a manufacturer specialized in LED lights for automotive clients and the aftermarket. One scene I had to shoot was a test situation of LED lights where they measure the width and complexity of said light on a white wall (and through a tunnel - to measure how far away it still emits light - and how much). Awesome stuff! The room itself is completely devoid of natural or artificial light - when testing, of course. The walls apart from the white one were painted pitch black. Most shots with my RF15-35 were at ISO 16000 and it just jumped wherever I wanted it to go and even held on with AF-C if needed.
  • AF in general seems a lot more precise - the shots that did not land were the fault of my own, not the camera
  • I don't know if it's by design but the R5II did show me the heat display, though it was hovering around no bars / one bars - presumably because I also did some video free hand for our video guy at work
  • the body itself gets a lot warmer than I've ever encountered with my R5 - even in stills only
  • the new joystick design is a lot more comfortable for my thumb
  • I still honestly don't fully get the new AF modes in the M-Fn menu - the first time ever that I need to read a manual for that
  • the camera itself is not noiseless - it emits a very slight humming - but not annoying to me so far

But here's the kicker:

I STILL ONLY HAVE ONE MEASLY LP-E6P BATTERY. WHAT THE ACTUAL SHIT, CANON!?

No shop I know of has them in stock yet - I called them all.
