Canon EOS R5 Mark II user feedback and discussion

It won't really be noticeable (not even close to 3% of battery a week).
At ~15 microwatt, such a screen will drain the Canon battery in about 1 million hours, if my calculations aren't wrong. The battery discharges faster on its own.
Thanks, I respect people who have the maturity to admit when they are wrong.

Oh, wait…you didn’t. Never mind.

My statement that the top LCD doesn't take any power was incorrect, however it doesn't drain the battery 3% a week, do you agree with that or not?
It doesn't affect the battery charge in any practical way.

A bit more testing today. After some shots during the morning I found a group of Red-breasted Nuthatches that were finding water at a leaking valve. Decided to assist them with an easier source of water and also get some shots/test some other features on the camera during the normally p00h lighting of the early afternoon. Apologize for the craptastic phone shots of the rear lcd. The batteries were freshly charged and did very well, IMO, especially if you saw the amount of chimping. I like being able to lock single files and delete the rest of the scene.

Has anyone gotten the MF override to work? On my R8 I can turn the focus ring on the 100-500 and it will change focus accordingly, that doesn’t work with the RF100L. On my R5II neither of those lenses can be focused using their focus ring in AF mode :(
The mystery why it won’t work on the RF100L is solved: https://cam.start.canon/en/H001/supplement_0060.html

Canon thinks that that macro lens doesn’t need manual overrides, you’ll have to flick the AF/MF switch like a real photographer!

I see that shutterspeeds faster than 1/8000s is not available in Av, that sucks… I only shoot with Av, auto iso and set a lowest shutter speed if I’m not using lights. Anyone know why it’s that way?

I don’t understand why the top LCD should take more power than, say, a Casio G-Shock series watch. I’ve noticed that the LP batteries designed for the R5 discharge much faster just sitting on the shelf. Sometimes the batteries seem to discharge faster when my camera is powered off than when I forget and leave it powered on while it is in storage for a couple of weeks. some variables really make the battery life in the R5 very unpredictable.

The one thing that extends my battery life more than any other is not having the EVF and back screen set to auto switching, because if I’m walking around with a camera, the EVF is constantly activating. So I just use the red video button to switch from back screen to EVF as I bring the camera to my eye. Makes a huge difference in the amount of time I can walk around with a single battery.

No news on the LP-E6P front - still haven't gotten my spares that I ordered. Thanks for all the suggestions though, seems like the usual places I would otherwise shop (Achatzi, AC Foto) don't have them in stock either.

One thing of note though: whereas my R5 would only support a smaller AF-Tracking-Field in Servo-Mode with the 1.4x converter, it is now approx. the same size as without one. Nice!

R cameras never actually power off in the way you'd expect, you can configure the wifi and bluetooth to work while powered off. The manual says 'Airplane mode' should be used to kill wireless when the power switch is set to 'off'.

You also stated it has an e-ink display... Regardless, no it doesn't draw a significant amount of power, nor did I suggest that it does. There are multiple reasons the battery charge drops over time, self-discharge being a major one but also other components in the camera that use power when it's set to 'off' (which is really 'standby' as I stated above).

I ordered one battery at Foto Siegl this morning. It's already shipped and should be here in 1 or 2 days. After my order the shop system said: no items available. I guess i was very lucky this morning.
Idealo.de helped me. Was also able to find a shop were i ordered a R5II last week that got delivered last saturday. Had one pre-ordered at calumet but didn't hear anything from them.

I was in a real quandary about buying an R52 as I already have an R5.
While I do shoot a few birds, most of my subjects are reasonably static, so while improved af and other features would be nice, I'm still very happy with my R5.
For little more, I decided to buy a Fuji GFX 100S2.
For how I use a camera, 100megapickles are very, very nice.
Using a Fringer adapter I can use all of my old ef lenses, although there is some vignetting on some lenses but even using the Fuji's 35mm crop mode, it still gives you a 60mp file.
And it's fun to learn a new system. Canon's menus are so much better and logical.
I've been shooting Canon since 1964, and I have a large selection of Canon lenses both ef and RF, so please don't call me a turncoat, but for me, it made sense to expand my photography rather than just buying an improved version of what I already have.

I'm enjoying my R5II a lot, but I definitely could see myself buying a GFX in the near future. 100MP sounds fun. The original 100S does seem to sell reasonably cheap these days

I also took my R5 Mk2 out this morning with my RF 400 mm f2.8 + 2x TC. Recapture helped a bit, but honestly wildlife was a bit sparse. I also found that it was much faster to lock focus on the birds without being distracted by nearby branches and leaves. Moreover, once you locked on the subject it was stuck and did not get distracted. IMO even a bit better than the AF on the R3, but much better AF than the R5, which I used for a while. I am impressed. I am still dialing in my default settings on the camera as well.

Just FYI B&H has a sale on Prograde Cobalt v4 cards. A pair of 1.3 TB cards goes for $1350, which is $400 off the normal two-pack price.
I've been thinking of getting the RF version of the 400 2.8.
How much of a IQ loss would you say with the 2X attached? Acceptable?

The IQ loss is acceptable to me, but you might very well have different standards than I do. If you can I would recommend renting the lens and the 2x TC and trying it out for a week to see if you like it. I also use the 2x TC with the RF 100-300 mm f2.8 lens and also find the images acceptable.
