Canon officially launches the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM

That would mean an approximately 82mpx FF body at a 'reasonable' price, which seems most unlikely to happen. Agree that the R7 with a high opitcal quality lens is attractive. For me, a future R6 series body with 30mpx will be the sweet spot.
An updated 30mp APS-C sensor with updated frame rate and AF would be welcomed by those users.

A ~80mp full frame version would be welcomed by a different set of users and my guess is that speed/AF will not be their primary consideration for portrait and landscape usage.

A combined 80mp/fast speed would be a different beast and price range all together!

The RF 28-70/2.8 is $1099. Available 9/26.

And no hood.

The pricing on this seems a little weird given the 24-70 2.8 can be had all day long for $1400 used, and 2k grey market, and is probably a significantly better all around product.

At $899 I'd consider it as a weight saver, at 1100 I'd just pass and stick with the L lens.

Well, this can eventually go $800-$900 grey market and $600 used.. But pass for me too..

Canon doesn't sell used or grey market lenses. So it's less than half the price of the L. I'm not sure how that's "weird"? A majority of customers don't buy from those two markets.

I like the size/weight quite a bit so I ordered it.

I don't have the RF 24-70 F2.8. I do have the RF 28-70 F2 and the size/weight difference is gigantic! This together with my R8 will make for a fairly compact, especially compared to R5 + 28-70 F2. Hopefully the image quality will actually be close to L series.

I do have the R50 + Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, so 28.8 - 80mm FF equivalent and I really like the size and portability of that kit. But, in low light I do feel it struggles a bit. I'm hoping the R8 + 28-70 F2.8 will be the sweet spot.

I'm looking at my 28-70L brick and considering doing the same. I have such a love/hate for that lens.

Wooow, what an unexpected announcement and nice surprise. This might be the lens to replace my 24-105mm F4 although it is slightly heavier than I hoped for. But on the other hand, it has a F2.8 aperture
The F4 at the long end will do a better job of blurring the background than at 70 2.8. I'll wait and see how the lens performs, but this release feels a little... like I said, weird. The segment, and pricing seems off to me. Obviously I'm aware it's just my initial gut opinion.

That's not really true with the current 24-70/24-105, not noticeably anyway. Big gaps in mfd.

Damn! What a surprise.

Really compelling argument for myself as a professional to have this for travel and home use and then have a 24-105 f2.8 or 28-70 f/2 as my main lens for work.

Currently the 24-70 is a compelling lens all around for both uses, but I'd love the smaller size of this on vacation. Add in that I have the RF 16mm, and I really probably wouldn't miss 24mm since I already make sure to bring the rf 16mm along on trips.

The MFT charts look very impressive fro this lens:

It's really not that far from the RF 24-70mm f2.8 LIS. Slightly softer at the 70mm end, but on a R6ii or R8 that's not going to be seen in the final images. The weight is amazingly light at 500g, 0.24x max magnification is sweet too.
Dust and weather sealing is a suprise too. I'm guessing the build quality and durability will be "light".
The UK pricing is a wee bit steep at £1249 UKP, I'm guessing this will drop to around £1K street pricing once availabily has settled.

I think this lens will be a big seller for Canon, certainly an attractive if you want something small and light.
Canon are stating very clearly that this lens on a R8 is less than 1Kg, that is VERY impressive and portable.
