Top plate has been redesigned along with welcome internal changes(USB port being 10Gbps from mere 480Mbps). Buffer is massive for camera in its class. Sure missing 8 way controller is a let down but not at all a deal breaker(unlike R50 which has UHS-I SD slot).
Do you mean the look of it? Who on earth cares about that?: they are releasing a mini-R6II at a massive discount, less a number of features (including handling and body elements) that a bunch of people (myself being one) would not have used in the R6II anyway. I'd love (for eg) IBIS, but the specs are highly appealing at the price (and size and weight) point. I think it'll sell like hotcakes. The R8 is literally just the RP with a new name lmao Canon is so lazy. They couldn't even add a joystick or control wheel.
I care because the RP is not a very great body to begin with (it’s 5 years old now). Canon being lazy means that same design without a wheel or joystick (even the r10 has a joystick and costs less).Do you mean the look of it? Pretty stellar review.Gordon Laing R8 review
Basically the R6 II brains in an RP body.
Sure - and we all have different priorities. But this has the R6II sensor, CPU, AF and most in-camera processing and video modes, for about 2/3 the price of the R6II. There are always going to be compromises, and IBIS is probably the biggest from my point of view - but not redesigning an 'adequate' but uninspiring body design is certainly not the worst I can think of. It's not lazy, it's just reflective of the price point and the need to differentiate from its higher status sibling.I care because the RP is not a very great body to begin with (it’s 5 years old now). I think you are underestimating how successful the RP has been.Canon's thinking seems to be, if peoples biggest gripe about the Rp is the battery, give them 2 fingers and stick it in the R8 too.
Thanks
I am guessing that the footprint of the R8 is identical to the RP and that the grip extension will fit both cameras . I read somewhere an interview with the design team of the RP and a lot of thought and work had gone onto that design. It feels so good in the hand (with grip) I think it would be a shame to change it.Low cost, but also light and small. I’m interested in it for the last two, especially compared to my R3. Most of my use will be on a tripod, so I’m not bothered by the low end EVF or cramped ergonomics.
However, an important consideration for me will be the availability of a good quality L-bracket (RRS, Kirk). RRS made one for the RP, I hope they will for the R8. I inquired with them about it. They were forthcoming when I inquired about a plate for the R3.
Congratulations on the scoop but I disagree with you on the controls. The R8 is literally just the RP with a new name lmao Canon is so lazy. They couldn't even add a joystick or control wheel.
On the 700D it has a button you hold where your thumb rests to change the function of the dial, I don't know why they didn't include that for the R50.Only one control dial on the R50, no joystick, video record limit, no custom modes - I'm getting an R10!![]()
Yeah, I remember that. One of the things that made me upgrade from the 700D to the RPOn the 700D it has a button you hold where your thumb rests to change the function of the dial, I don't know why they didn't include that for the R50.
and ancient UHS-I SD slot with abysmal buffer.Only one control dial on the R50, no joystick, video record limit, no custom modes - I'm getting an R10!![]()
Success for the Canon marketing department thenOnly one control dial on the R50, no joystick, video record limit, no custom modes - I'm getting an R10!![]()
The price of 1799 Euros for the R8 is even higher than I feared. That is TWICE as expensive as the RP, which is available for 899 Euros. 1799 is much too expensive for a crippled down "amateur camera".
Gordon Laing's review is excellent too:
