Happy Hallowe’en! Canon to announce 3 lenses on October 31, 2024

I can already hear the wailing. The 50mm won't be small enough compared to the competition. Or it won't be big enough. If the 70-200 lens aimed at video can't take a TC, the cries will be heard at the corners of the Earth. Its a fixed zoom that isnt as compact as the collapsing design - this display of Canon's continued wanton malice towards its consumers, and continued compliance with the laws of physics will force many to Sony or Nikon.

I'm sure in use they'll all be quite good. I have the 24mm 1.8, which I like for is small size and macro function. But I'll have to see what this 24mm L has to offer. Still rocking my Sigma 50mm Art - no reason to upgrade that one. Maybe some good deals will be had on the external zoom 70-200s and I'll finally add one to my bag.

Brian

I never noticed the throw of the little 70-200 f/2.8 until people started to complain about it when the rumors started for this new one. Then I realized it was stupid to care since it had never been an issue for me. I'll be keeping the little one.

I have used the external zooming 70-200 mm and never noticed the throw being an issue either. For me, I would like the ability to use TCs.

The only lens on which I'v really noticed a long zoom throw is when I tried out the RF 200-800. Has not been an issue for me with any other lenses, EF or RF.

None of these lenses are ones that do the trick for me, and I don't find them to be a treat, either. I'm good with my compact RF 70-200/2.8, and the 28-70/2 does the job of a bag full of primes for my needs.

I hate the 28-70 f/2 until I dump the photos.

Interesting. I definitely have a hard time with that lens if I want to zoom from 70 to 200mm at once, and vice-versa.

I won’t be replacing it, I love its form factor way too much and, in fact, it’s been just half a year since I bought it.

But that zoom ring…

Looking forward to the 50 f/1.4, I’d really like something better than the 50STM, but smaller/lighter/cheaper than the f/1.2.

The pricing..oh boy the pricing...im scurred. I'm guessing it's going to cost at least the same amount as the 28 to 70 cheaper zoom.

Add canon hubris+ "hybrid" features...1400 easy

I suspect the 24 and 50 will cost what the 35 does. Give or take.

The 70-200... $3000?
I think you’re wrong on the pricing of the 50mm tho probably dead on for the 24mm.

The 50mm 1.8 is 199$ the 1.2 is 2099$
This 50mm 1.4 should be around 999$ give or take.

They need a “cheaper” lens if they want people to jump into the VCM line.

But let’s see, that Canon Tax is horrible at times… and halloween can be frightful, lol.

Well, one can hope.... "Hope is a dangerous thing".

.... and no, they don't need cheaper lenses considering they have no problem selling the ones they currently make.

Economies of scale come into play with VCM and the iris thing.

The big question for me is: will the pre-order price for the 50VCM be lower than the grey market price for the f/1.2? The grey market price is more than €700 lower than the local price here in the Netherlands.

Almost certainly. My understanding is that it will be a more "traditional" 70-200mm design meaning it won't have the same limitations as the controversial compact 70-200mm. For me, the compact RF 70-200mm is the first 70-200mm that I've actually used significantly primarily due to its compact design.
I can second that! I was never interested in the bulky, heavy EF versions. The RF 70-200mm was meant to be a stop-over solution until my RF 100-500mm (back during covid) but it is still in my bag and will probably never leave it :)
