Do we know if it’s gonna be a VCM, instead of a dual nano USM?
From what I’ve seen, it looks pretty amazing, for a zoom lens.
I own the lens, but I don’t have a camera that challenges it, so I’m unable to talk out of experience.

The IQ of the RF 70-200/2.8 is excellent. Better than the EF MkII/III versions, which were already very, very good. My RF 100-300/2.8 is sharper, but for 4x the cost I'd certainly hope so.

Try to hike on the Alps with a camera, 3 lenses (R5 + 35 1.4, 100-500 and 85 1.2) and a drone plus a backpack for the night at the refuge
The 35 1.2 will be something I am confident I will be able to handle with panache... should the mighty Canon see fit to release it!

1 body is fine! If the R5 dies on me I still have the drone and the phone (no, they are not the same, not even close... but there is a limit to what I'm willing to haul and I prefer 1 more lens to 1 more camera).
I've visited those alpine trails a few times. The only time I've traveled with 2 cameras was for a safari in South Africa...
We had donkey stew with polenta and mushrooms at the rifugio. It was delicious
Not a very summery dish but still no one complained

I won't say I will never buy a higher resolution body, but for now I'm totally okay with what I have. I rarely crop pictures, so that makes these 20 megapixels very effective.

I have either missed or can't seem to find anything... Does anyone know if they are planning to release non-hybrid models??? I've been waiting to pull the trigger on a 24 1.4(1.2?) and 35 1.4 to fill out my primes and I'm completely confused if I should buy these new VCM lenses or continue waiting?? I use my R5 exclusively for photos so I really have no desire to have a video-capable lens. The 35 VCM seems to have glaring reviews but I'm just not sure if about it if there will eventually be a non-VCM version??
My current dilemma...
- quit waiting, skip the primes and buy the 28-70 2
- buy the current 35 VCM and the assumed to-be-released 24 VCM
- wait it out for photo-specific 24/35 glass(not really an option because I have to spend before year-end and I'm assuming these won't magically appear for Christmas)

I'm sorry but if you think the quality of the current RF 70-200 isn't amazing then you're doing something wrong!!
In 2024 alone I've taken over 200,000 sports images with it on the R3 and R5. I'm fairly sure I bought it in 2019 so I'd imagine I've taken over million shots with it in total using the original EOS R, the R6 and then the R3 and R5, the quality is impeccable, I'd be really interested to see where you think it isn't up to expected quality?

Always 2 bodies (only one regretted exception this fall) plus 6-8 lenses, but trying to reduce by using WA zooms. The 15-35 f/2,8 has fully convinced me. On the other hand, it would replace 3 Leica M lenses which are not really heavier...and so much better than any zoom.My H5X is not great with excursions...

But I'll save 300 grams replacing the EF 100-400 with the RF 100-500, both without tripod collar (300 cc more water!).
No matter which lenses I use, never without a Mindshift rotation backpack in the mountains! (And a few Ovo Sport bars, the ones you only get in Switzerland, without chocolate coating).

That's way too much for me - maybe when I was younger....
I love the 100-500 on hikes. My most used lens during hikes. If I want a landscape image I use it for a panorama. If I want macro it delivers. Far away wildlife, ditto.

The 1.2’s are a dream but as you said, they have shortcomings for video and their weight. If its worth it financially to downgrade I may sell them.
I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing the 85mm 1.4, an 18mm 1.4 and 100mm 2.8 in the VCM line. Simply by judging what Panasonic did with their L-Mount Hybird Line.

If you’re exclusively photography and looking to compliment the 50mm 1.2 and 85mm 1.2 and dont mind shooting at F2.
Get the 28-70 F/2 - But it’s huge! The 35 1.4 VCM is a great lens but it comes with shortcomings not seen on the EF version.
Optically the 28-70 and 50/85 1.2 are MUCH better… but you pay in size, weight and cash for this and it may or may not been a need for you.
Also depends on how often you shoot wide open, there is quite a difference in Bokeh and Light Gathering from 1.4 to 2.0.
Alternatively you can purchase the EF 24mm and 35mm 1.4 with the RF-EF adaptor which will be optically better.
I dont see canon releasing another 35mm 1.4 or 1.2 anytime “soon”.

geek.Same favorite too (EF 100-400, soon 100-500) and same uses. But on the other backpack strap, a Leica M + 35mm clipped in (PeakDesign). My 2 most often used lenses. But you also sure know how beautiful cities in Italy an France can be: 24 TSE is my other "necessity". I happen to hate converging building lines. And a few WAs, a macro, a short tele...
With the 100-500 I might skip the macro and save another 400 grams, slightly reducing right knee pain. Or eat 400 grams more in a rifugio (most probable!).

I've had several f/1.2 and f/1.4 primes, and I typically shot them at ~f/2 anyway because I like both eyes in focus. So for me, the 28-70/2 meets the need. Yes, it's big, heavy and expensive as a single lens. But it's smaller, lighter and cheaper than a bag full of L primes.
