R1 Reviews

I’d start here, they are a Canon authorized dealer showing the R1 as in stock.

I’d call them before placing an order online. When I was looking for the then-unavailable RF 10-20/4L, some shops showing ‘in stock’ did not actually have the lens. The third place I called did.
Thank you for helping out a community member.

WOW thank you for that, I called them and the guy said it was in stock and he'd ship it today. I ordered it and wound up saving about $600 over the BBY order. I'll call again in a few minutes and make sure they got the order but I may have it Monday.

Just got the email that it's ready to be shipped with a label. The guy at the store that I talked to also called me to tell me he was packing it up to ship. Pretty nice customer service IMO. I may have it as soon as Monday.

I believe you are correct in this as well, I have little faith in what I was told by these reps as they are simply terminal jockeys that regurgitate what they see on a screen rather than have any actual ability to do anything. I am still hopeful it ships early next week but my doubts grow with each passing day. I have also started looking around the internet to find one in stock somewhere, if I do I am going to grab it and cancel my BB order, but I also have little faith in that option as well.
LOL, guess what, I just did the same. Normally I have to drive 2.5 hrs to Portland from Seattle or get the one relative to make a pick-up for me on a trip north to avoid 10% tax but Ohio apparently does not yet have to charge for WA tax which is AWESOME.

Thanks, hope it works out for you if you are planning on getting one. I wish I would have had it for today but the R3 still works just fine.
I have had once since released day. The R1 is improved in many areas (faster fps, deeper buffer, X-type AF sensors, world-class EVF, matched card slots), but with that said, the R3 is still a formidable camera.

It really is, I plan to keep it as a backup camera and/or get my son to start being a second shooter for events when he's not doing college running/events and use the R3. I still wish they would have bumped the resolution a little, but I can live with 24mp for the time being and use the R5M2 for slower or less speed-intensive things like nature and weddings and the like.

One thing I wish they could/would add into the AF system is when the camera sees multiple focus targets, one could push a program button, start shooting, and have it cycle among the targets and take a programmed set of shots, say 3, 4, or 5 shots on each one. This would be amazing for shooting track events and even motorsports.

Now that you say that I did not have to pay my almost 10% tax either, I may have to start shopping at this store just for that.

I agree that a minor bump in resolution (28-30 MP) would have been nice, but similar to your experience I can live with 24 MP quite easily. My first professional body was a Nikon D4S with 16 MP. I like your idea of being able to cycle through multiple targets; maybe Canon will add it as a future feature if enough end users request it.

My gut instinct says that we will likely see a global sensor in the R1 Mk2, and as a wildlife photographer I honestly do not really need that feature.

I will look into how to communicate that feature idea to Canon. I will need to word it in a way that makes sense as well since we would likely be dealing with a translation at some point on the journey. I cannot imagine this being difficult with the modern processing capabilities of these things.

Edit: Adding a photo to illustrate my idea will be helpful I think, let me know if you would think this would make sense to others to illustrate my point.

I know I could modify the aperture and get them all in focus; however, I think this idea might still be good for instances where I may not want to do that or realistically be able to do that, such as shooting in low light. Not long after this photo was taken, the sky became densely overcast, which was great for soft shadows, but the ISO started to climb pretty quickly. I shoot these events with shutter priority, and my aperture went to 2.8 and stayed there to compensate, making for a narrow DOF.

Sounds like a use case for which eye-controlled AF would work well.

My Brief 30 minute walk with the R1 this morning

This morningI went for a brief walk with the R1 to see if I could find any birds to photograph. Wildlife was basically missing except for a few Canada Geese. My first impressions are not very useful, but here they are:

  1. I don't notice the increase in weight relative to the R3 when using a long-telephoto lens.
  2. AF acquisition is exceptionally quick appears to be instantaneous. Definitely faster than the R5 and a bit faster than the R3.
  3. AF is a bit more sticky than I remember the R3 being, but not by much.
I am definitely impressed with the modest (yet significant) improvement in AF performance.

it could be, but I think I have to lift to change focus, I am more looking for multi-target tracking with a programable automated target switch. The other thing is I have yet to have the eye-control actually work for me. No matter how much I tune and calibrate it, it never accurately tracks my eye. I do wear corrective lenses that are progressive and believe this throws it off for the camera.

Another reason for the auto-target switch is that the whole scene shown above lasted for about 2-3 seconds max, I am way too old to be doing all that sh*t while shooting LOL. Edit, I am really not THAT old I know but am already seeing my coordination fall off.
