The PowerShot V Series Will Become Canon's New Line of Compact Cameras

With them cancelling the PowerShot G7 X Mark III and PowerShot SX70 HS, it would be good to see a second model sometime soon with a bigger zoom as a successor to the G3X.... PowerShot V3?

Am I the only one who is begging for a GX1 III Aps-c replacement?
I love that camera, I just bought one, but the video capabilities are quite outdated at this point.
Aps-c sensor, zoom, evf, nd, optical stabilizer and you can still put in your pocket, I love the G1X III
No, I'm with you! The G1X Mark III is almost the perfect travel camera for me. The only reason I didn't keep it is I value 4K video a lot on my trips in addition to photos, otherwise I'd still have it today!

There hasn't been anything like it for the size and features. Everything you mentioned made it so perfect on trips.

I’ve never understood the high regard (generally) for the RX100 on CR, and yet the total disdain for the G1Xiii.
I’d say that out of all my cameras the G1Xiii is probably my favourite. The modern aps sized sensor means that I can put it on a tripod out in the field at 100 iso and equal my 5Ds with a zoom lens, up to the G1X’s 6000 pix output size and 24-72 (equiv) lens of course. I’ve never found a 1” sensor camera to really match a FF head to head, unlike an aps sized sensor.
I presume this lack of love is to do with the camera “only” having a 3x zoom and relatively slow at the long end, yet in practice the difference in field of view between 24 and 72 is enormous and 5.6 at 45mm is quite useable in most situations.
For anyone looking for a genuinely (coat) pocketable compact I really can recommend the G1Xiii.
Yes The G1X Mark III is totally underrated. Although I rock a M6 Mark II for vacation now, the G1X Mark III is still my all time favorite travel camera. Like mentioned above, I only moved on cause I truly value 4K video. But there is something about using a small all-in-one APS-C camera of that size with a stabilized integrated lens on travels. It was the only camera I felt that gave me the quality of larger mirrorless cameras and full manual control, yet felt like I didn't have to be conscious that I had a camera on me and actually fully experience my travels, if that makes sense. I really miss it!

Fingers crossed that it's really gonna be APS-C and there's been a misunderstanding with the focal length.
CR wrote 16-50mm (35mm equivalent). But I think it might be the real focal length, and on APS-C it would be a 25.6-80mm equivalent - around the same like the G1X Mark III.
If that would be a f/2-f/2.8 lens (highly doubtable), plus leaf-shutter Canon would have an awesome competitor for the Fujifilm X100V.

I doubt it. The other suggestion in the specs that this is a FF equiv focal length, comes from the 1.4 crop mode. This would have been implemented to provide a quick way to get to 70mm (portrait) equivalent. Fuji, Leica and others have done something similar in the past. The 1.4 crop would provide 12mp at 70mm equivalent.

"We have now had two sources that are saying that that it’ll be “approximately” be a Micro 4/3 sensor size."

It doesn't make sense for Canon to create a whole new sensor size for just one camera model. If true, they must be planning additional models that use that sensor.

I am so glad to this announcement, as a G5x II lover, I would like the same range with a better sensor, new technology and I'll be so down for this new Camera. Powershot line is so cool when it comes to traveling or concert photography and you dont want to have the big dslr, so happy about this news

The G1X Mark II had a similar sensor, 1.5 inch type with 18.7x14mm sensor, close to the 18x13.5mm of MFT. And they only ever made 1 camera with that sensor.

I just hope they don't F it up with mediocre optics on the level of a kit lens. Gen Z buys the G7X series like crazy because of it's premium optics and the leaf shutter.

"Canon has likely learned an important lesson over the last bunch of years. It’s better to embrace an upcoming market from the start, than be playing catch-up once again."

Funny, I would have thought the lesson was the opposite - they can dominate a segment even if they're the last major player to enter it.

Perhaps if the camera is more video centric, the sensor dimensions could be something like 13.5x25.5, 17:9 ratio for video and cover all the basic still photo formats. Imagine APS-C format lens designs should cover without too much trouble.

I love mine too but I like this zoom range (16-50mm equivalent) for every day photos

I love speculating in this segment so I’ll drop my wishlist based on the above specifications. The camera spec list is probably already made but I want to leave it here regardless. I’m not sure how many of these bullet points are possible (esp. the battery)

16-50mm with F/1.8-4.0 aperture at least
Optical image stabilization
Leaf shutter
4K 24p with fast readout (subsampled is ok but only a small crop)
Detachable EVF
UHS-1 SD card
Good internal microphones with built in dead cat like sennheiser mke200
Weather sealing
DPAF-2
Bright 1.62 or 1.84 million dot fully articulating screen
LP-E17 battery (probably a pipe dream)
Digital zoom for video
Three control dials (G1X MkIII style or M6 MkII style)
Clicky control ring (if it has a control ring on the lens)
5 GHz WiFi
USB-C charging and webcam function
AF-On button with AF/MF switch like M6 MkII
Size comparable to G1X MkII
Internal 3-stop ND
Some flavor of c-log
Waveform

Whew, your wishlist definitely has a lot specs that won´t apply to price point and probably not to the targeted market. I don´t think that people who currently buy compact cameras really need...

...internal 3-stop ND
...c-log
...weather sealing
...detachable EVF
...LP-E17 battery

I´d expect it to have just the features one needs to take a picture and make some videos.
