Canon EOS R1 Spotted in the wild at the Monaco GP

I absolutely know what the R1 should be capable of and if they make the mistake of using a sensor with a lower pixel count will cause Canon to fall behind in the camera market.
Better than Canon? Oh, ok. Good for you. I know, Canon is doomed. YAPODFC. Welcome to the ranks of those on this forum predicting that for over 12 years. Soon, you’ll look just as asinine as the rest of them.

You may feel that 30mp is meaningless, but for many of us, you are completely wrong.
How many? Do you know? Who is more likely to know what the majority of potential R1 buyers want, you or Canon? Don’t bother answering, the answer is Canon. In the real world, anyway. What goes on in the fantasyland inside your head is your business.

The camera is designed based off of the input from the best sports photographers in the world. Along with input from other types of photographers that use 1 series cameras.

Canon has been very good at delivering volume especially for entry-level cameras to maintain market share, but I was curious the other day and I looked up the financial reports of all the Japanese camera companies that break out their camera revenues. It somewhat surprised me to find that Sony's stills and video camera revenue is actually about 20% higher than Canon over the last year.

View attachment 216913

(Canon and Sony's revenues doesn't include network cameras, Sony revenues doesn't include their sensor business, Fuji revenues doesn't include Instax)

Sony's professional video camera segment is huge - they have around a 50% of the professional video camera market in terms of share. Canon's isn't, and "cameras" in Canon's financials are just that, video I believe is in the 'and others", as when they talk about the camera segment, it's purely cameras and doesn't include the professional video.

You may feel that 30mp is meaningless, but for many of us, you are completely wrong. Having pictures with higher resolution that allow for more fine detail is something that would be sorely missing on a flagship with a sensor that could easily have it and all of the other bells and whistles it will have. Having more pixels gives sports photogs the ability to zoom and crop where fewer pixels will reach the problem of grainy un-detailed pictures much faster. I have run into this far too many times, even with the R3.

good grief. it's around an 11% difference in overall resolution. no one is going to see it.

36MP sure. but 30? no.. simply because no lens is absolutely perfect and while you will get a resolution bump from 24 to 30, you don't get ALL of it unless you have an absolutely perfect lens that outresolves the entire sensor.

If someone took the 10MP from my post, then yes. I invented the number 10MP, because this would be the highest resolution EVF in any Camera, the Sony a1 has 9.44MP i think. And it would fit into a Canon flagship to set new records. I personaly would hope for the R1 to have a sensor resolution of 30-ish MP, but in the end it really won't matter for most of the users. Prefering speed over file size and resolution is not a bad idea.
EVFs are advertized in dots, not pixels. The dots are what we’d call subpixels when talking about monitors or TVs.
So that 9.4 megadot EVF in the sony is 2048×1536 and 3 actual megapixels.

Thank you for stating the obvious. My last 1-series camera was the 1Dx Mk2 and then I purchased the R3. For me a R1 is a worthwhile and significantly upgrade if the rumored specifications are correct.

Well, but the same is true for camera sensors.
Technically, a 24 megapixel sensor has only 24 million subpixels with 1/4 of red pixels, 1/4 of blue pixel and 1/2 of green pixels (bayer-matrix).
The final 6000x4000px jpeg is only interpolated from those subpixel.

Since I don't know if I'm allowed to repost the photo here, i will just add the link.

In the german DSLR-Forum is a high resultion image of the R1 backside (though a registration is required):

There you can clearly see the flip-screen as well as an additional M-Fn3 button in the left upper corner (compared to the R3).
Also there is a white box (?) right beside the LAN-led.

Not a fan of 24mp for photo, but am for video. Majority of the time I used the R5 for my photo work and then the R3 for video and some photo work. That type of R3 photo work was for events and anything low light.

If the R5 II can outdo the R3, then I’m pretty sure it will be my new go to and bypass the R1. Definitely still “want” the R1 tho… so idk lol ugh

Guys, there is a lot to talk about now! As @Gendra mentioned, the pictures are really good. I have asked them, if i can use the pics, but did not get an answer by now, so i keep waiting. As long as i do not have the okay, i will tell you what we see there - i expect them to be all around the web by tomorrow:

  • there is a normal 3-axis flippy screen
  • there is a new M-Fn3 button on the top left (below the menu button)
  • there are four playback buttons below the display: playback, magnifying glass, dustbin, rating button
  • there is a LAN-light (so as expected full featured LAN) and a light or sensor below these buttons - we cannot say what this is
  • The INFo button now is built into the vertica grip as well
  • the Viewfinder is really huge
  • the Joysticks and AF Smart Control are included, as we already know

There is also a bit of translucent plastic (or some material like what the tally light on the front) in the textured grip by the wheel.
The new sensor thing looks as if it has a sensor in it due to the dark box within it. I would imagine it would be a light sensor or maybe a fingerprint sensor (in an older style although the former seems more like it).

Yeah, this will be the indication light for writing/reading to or from the Cards i think
I also think the other one is a sensor, but i don't know for what... i mean fingerprint? Yeah, really cool but this also would be a huge surprise.

I would have to agree on the drive activity indicator. Fingerprint does sound crazy. Maybe it is just myself wanting more security on these cameras. For anyone not in a big company, where these cameras are rounding errors on a balance sheet, security like a fingerprint sensor would be much appreciated.

Thank you for posting the link!!

I agree that this one is the most intriguing:

I have no idea what it is.

My only grip is the 3-axis flippy screen. I would have liked a screen that flipped up at a straight right angle to the camera body. Oh well....

24MP?

I just want a rugged R3/R1 body (for Antartica/Svalbaard etc) with 45MP. Nikon is the only choice at the moment, sadly.
I took a 7DMII multiple times to both those places with no problem at all. Unless you are on some rare expedition, you are going during the "summer season" and temps weather really not unusual. Weather is worse in Hokkaido in winter during tourist season than Antarctica as far as temps, ice, etc. My R5 did just fine this year in Hokkaido and the Falklands and will be going to Greenland and Svalbard in a few months and expect the same unless I drop it in the ocean!
