Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM will start shipping on May 31, 2023

My local camera shop had a vendor day and I was able to handle a preproduction model of the RF 100-300 mm f2.8. It is amazingly light and the throw for the zoom is reasonably short. I was able to mount it on a R3 camera, but since it was a preproduction model I was not allowed to take any pictures. It also felt very well balanced in the hand with the R3.
Preproduction.. as if there will be any major or even minor difference from the "production" unit.

In one of the new Powershot reviews last week someone remarked "Look at that, it reports firmware 1.0.0, you'd almost think that all this emphasis on it being preproduction is just a way of waving away criticism in our reviews."

This close to shipping, 'preproduction' needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

There could readily be a minor firmware revision before the official launch date on the 31 May 2023. With that said, all hardware and electronics are obviously finalized. Overall, I agree with your sentiments.

Can't wait. Mine is going on my R3.

I have no idea why "preproduction" is controversial, as though there's some conspiracy afoot. In any manufacturing process there are preproduction models. It simply means before mass production to check for manufacturing hurdles and to provide the marketing folks samples.

I happened to find a preproduction sales sample of a 50mm Takumar where the lens label had the words switched around in the wrong order. It was even used in a print ad. Very rare. Sold it for four digits.

"Fear not, there will be a nice teleconverter solution coming for both the Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM and the Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM. " Soooooo, I guess now we should hold off on acquiring the old TC's for the 100-300. Scenes from The God Father Photographer ... Just when I think I'm out ... they drag me back in!!! And I'm cracking up about the reasoning behind leaving the TC out on the RF 200-500, we are back to weight again hahahahahaha

Hoping the TC solution is made available before end of summer. Figure if its a combo in one, probably fetch around $1500, maybe $2000, will see.

Update from Canon.jp as of 18 May 2023:

RF Lens Delays May 18, 2023

View attachment 209099

I am not surprised at the delay, but the magnitude of the delay is quite surprising. I think I might be lucky to get the lens this year.
Ouch. Canon USA and B&H still say availability on 31-May. I’m presuming ‘ship sequentially’ means fill in the order that preorders were placed. Hopefully we’re high enough in Canon’s queue (however they allot among vendors).

That is what I hope as well, but time will tell. I know when I ordered the RF 135 mm f1.8 I received the first copy my local dealer received and they were only allocated a single lens on the day of release. In all honestly, it is only a lens and there are many other things in life to enjoy.

Directly after the first official worldwide presentation at canon.com was launched.
First on list of one of the bigger retailers.
A college ordered some hours later and was also only third on list.
Normally, when a new 400/2.8 or sth. like this comes out, this retailer has a list of at least 20-30 "rumor" pre-orders plus 10-15 orders some hours after launch.
Selling a 100-300 for 12k these days seems not to be taken for granted.

Thanks for the info. I was first on the list at a large retailer in the Northeastern United States so we shall see how it goes.

Here's what B&H said today:

B&H: Tomorrow is indeed the release date, but shipping depends on the stock of the item. at this time we have no received any stock yet.
Customer: That's surprising to hear that you haven't gotten any stock in yet, hope it arrives soon!
B&H: We do too!
B&H: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Customer: No, that's all. Will pre-order customers be informed of any further delays as you find out about them?
B&H: You would only be notified when your order is shipped.
B&H: If the item remains on backorder for more than 30 days, you get an automated backorder email notifying you of your active order
Customer: Thanks
B&H: You are very welcome.

Thanks for the update. Canon USA also says "Estimated arrival on: Wednesday, May 31," perhaps that means 'arrival at Canon USA and other retailers' and B&H will ship out on Wed and/or Thu, depending on number of orders and when the shipment from Canon is received.

Probably the first notification I'll get is from my credit card when the $10K charge hits, I suspect that will come before the shipping notification from B&H.
