Canon reveals PowerShot V1 Compact Camera

I've been talking about the old g12 that I used to carry around everywhere that was super rugged and literally just used to swing it from my hand because it was great. I also remember using the ND filter which was the only time in my camera life I've ever had access to one. So I don't understand why ND filters are not a big thing in crop or full frame bodies at least as far as I know, being a Canon shooter.

But all of this simply sounds like a r 50 in a compact body with a fan. I don't know how to get excited about the even smaller sensor then an M50. I just don't really know what to make of this camera.. . It just seems like a old concept of a compact with updated features for a lot of money potentially.

Otherwise the zoom range does sound pretty cool. But that's because I shoot a ton of ultra wide hehehe.

Why DOA? Internal ND, 15 fps in a compact camera, DPAF II.... I can see families with kids are getting one.

It might not be your on your wishlist, but I don't see a problem Canon trying to make compact cameras interesting again.
In my 2 cents Z30 is too big, and we all know how "good" Nikon's AF with the Expeed 6 chip. It's behind DiGiC X. And you might as well get mint used M200/M6ii+18-150.
The z30 is an old clunker and it shouldn't even be compared to anything. It is way overdue to come off of the market. I spent a long time investigating this camera and potential lasers and even compared to cannons and lackluster crop scenario, it falls way behind except in sensor quality.

The overall this still seems very very boring for even an updated g series. It's like other companies are making interesting cameras and can I just said we'll just update some specs and put a fan on a very old concept. 2.8- 4.5? Be still my heart.zzzz.

Is that flash sync speed accurate? 1/2000? If so that poses an interesting portrait option, especially with a 3 stop ND and a 50mm lens on the long end.

My other observation is that the lens optically covers pretty much all of the lenses on a smartphone these days - the three lens camera phones typically have 16mm, 24ish mm, and around 50mm "telephoto" optically, with cropping to get more ranges.

Love the specs and the zoom range. Hope the readout is fast in 60p at least, the lens control ring is clicky, and that the whole thing is weather sealed (S5II is weather sealed despite the active cooling). And while Sony has “upgraded” microphones in their ZV series, they never sounded good. I hope the V1’s microphone can be at least comparable to my sennheiser MKE 200.

I am looking forward to buying this, immediately upon release.

I had XC10 10 years ago. It is not a great cam but I like it.
Finally Canon takes 10 years to make a new sensor for their new cam.

I think this sensor will use for new XF405 or new XF605.
6K 30p or no crop 4K60p should not any problem for big size.
Or they can make new XC10 with more professional function.
V1 spec is great but it is not really great for professional.

XC10 uses LP-E6N...

24-105 is really, really, really, REALLY hard. Consider even the consumer 24-105 RF lens; it has 11 groups and 13 elements. You have to squish all that down to less than 20-30mm thickness.

there is a limit unless the camera also ships with its own specific micro tear to the fabric of the universe or something, especially if you are shoving a micro four thirds sensor into there.
Considering cameras like the Panasonic DC-ZS200D and similar Leica cameras that have 24-360 at the same size factor the 24-105 is more than doable (even with the large sensor).

It's a replacement for the 1.0" sensor PowerShot G7 X.

(PowerShot V1) "Compared to a 1.0-inch sensor, the 1.4-inch sensor has approximately twice the area" - Canon Japan.
I was about to post...but yep, that is a very nice advance over the 1" sensor in the G7X series.
Sensor SizeWidth (mm)Height (mm)Area (mm2)Area x FFCrop
1"13.28.81160.13
2.7
1.4"18.412.32260.26
2.0
4/3rds17.3132250.26
2.0
Canon APS-C22.5153380.39
1.6
FF36248641.0
1.0
226 mm2 vs 116 mm2.

Then you start playing with equivalence and it is a nice step up from a 1" sensor.

Seems like a nice camera. I am considering it.

You may want to wait to see what the optical quality looks like. Superzooms are very convenient but tend to have lower optical quality, particularly in terms of sharpness and contrast. Most "L" zooms max out around 3x focal length range for this reason.

Personally, I would prefer a high quality lens and understand if Canon sacrificed focal length to achieve that goal.

I love what Canon is doing with this. I will definitely buy it when/if it becomes available in the US. If it went out to at least 75 on the long end, it might've ended up as the only camera I take when traveling. I wonder if this will motivate Sony to update the RX100 series with a new model.

Edit: Oh, wait. No EVF. I knew it was too good to be true. <sigh>

Sounds really good... except USB 2.0.... WHYYY?!

and I expected more record time with this fan tbh!

Slowmow 1080p/100/120fps with sound would be also cool ;P!

But anyway!!! eND .... Canon is able to do this! What other brands already have for maybe years? (Fuji?)
Was hopng this for the R5II ;P

Anyway this camera sounds good for daily family photos :)! For this I mostly use my R6 + RF 35 1.8 (or 50 1.8)

Im wondering if this is even a worthwhile upgrade to my g7xiii that I use occasionally as a pocket camera. Sure it’s a bigger sensors but at the cost of lens that’s twice as slow. You get some added video capabilities but again, worth justifying? Im still waiting for an A7C comp or maybe even something like a ZFc?
